The entire point of the movie is to show that the Superman mythos belongs to no one and everyone at the same time. This is the historical baggage that Snyder is aware these characters carry: An endless barrage of fanboys and comics since the 30's, comparison to other iconic characters, and everyone thinking they have the last word on how these characters should and would act.
It compares Superman to Christ, Moby Dick, King Arthur, Zorro, JFK, etc. Batman is compared with Ahab and Charles F. Kane. It compares Doomsday with a fire spouting dragon, King Kong, a falling meteorite, a nuclear holocaust, the mythical Hydra, etc. So naturally it does the same with Lex (Zuckerberg). There are many comparisons with the Nolan trilogy because this film embraces it as part of the mythos too. For instance, the Batmobile scene ends up in him running into Superman, while in the Nolan version he decides to spare the Joker on his motorcycle. The Gotham football team's uniform is the same color in both films. Lois Lane and Rachel are dropped from a skyscraper.
It's a deconstruction and analysis of the characters themselves.
The film thrives on these types of associations, like the red Jolly Rancher pushed into the senator's mouth - "it's cherry" - coming back as the blood dripped onto Zod's face, the red graffiti on Superman's monument, and his slashed cheek, not to mention the nods to internet culture and memes. It's precisely this uncomfortable reevaluation and redemption of sugary pop imagery that drives the film. "Snyder intends to resolve the conflict between commerce and art," as Armond White notes. The basic thesis is that Superhero franchises are antithetical to what Superman actually stands for.
The fact that not a single character behaved the way fanboys expected just proves the point that all this was intentional.

His plan was to bring Superman down, he was an idol, a God, he wanted to defeat God, but he could not do it by himself, so he manipulated and manipulated until the could turn the symbolic humanity (Batman) against God (Superman).

Like Bruce, Lex hated that there was a powerful alien such as Superman flying around.
Unlike Bruce, who was worried for everybody's safety, Lex couldn't stand that there was someone more "powerful" than him and outside his control.
So he decides to destroy him by means of researching the alien tecnology, the kryptonite, and creating Doomsday.
Having access to the alien technology also gave him more knowledge and power.
But before killing Superman, he wanted to break him, so he manipulates that guy that works for Bruce.
Eventually, though, Batman steals his kryptonite, and he can't just let that slide, not only could he do stuff with the kryptonite, but he could steal from him again. So he kidnaps Superman's mother to manipulate him into killing batman.
But along the way, by having access to the information stored in the alien technology, Luthor learns that "He" is coming, and goes crazy.

The more I've thought about it, the more I think Lex's plan evolved over the course of the plot, incorporating new assets as they became available. That said, I think it started this simple: discredit Superman, turn public opinion completely against him, win the lucrative government contracts, gain access to Zod and Kryptonian tech, then kill Superman with the mandate of the people and be the big hero.
The first changes occurred when he became aware of the animosity the Batman harbored toward Supes. At that point, he probably started looking for a way to orchestrate a confrontation between the two.
Enter the disabled security guard. In him, Lex has a tool that can work on them both at the same time. In my mind, the only messages sent with the returned checks that Lex influenced came after the guard came to his attention via the press.
His revised plan at that point would have been to wait for the Batman to complete his preparations, keep teams in place to nab Lois and Martha on a moment's notice, and blackmail Superman into killing the Batman.
That brings us to Doomsday. I very much believe that Lex was betting on Bats and Supes to react in ways that supported his cynical world view: the Bat won't listen to reason and Supes will do everything in his power to save his adopted mother. This is very much a win-win for Lex. Regardless of who wins, they're facing his trump card already spent from the previous fight. His overconfidence coupled with his access to Kryptonian knowledge and tech would make it conceivable in his mind that he would be capable of orchestrating Doomsday's defeat.
