Stringer wanted in on the "game beyond the game", he wanted to do drug dealing without the bodies: the same fucking goal as Bunny.
Avon couldn't accept that because of who he was "Just a gangsta I suppose" (best fucking line in The Wire). I guess that makes him noble in his own way, but it's not like he was "right" where String was "wrong".
The way he treated Cutty was great though, how he genuinely wanted to help with the boxing thing, and how he let him leave the game without another word - he understood. String would have rather have him capped.

Stringer might not have been quite smart enough (he did try to call an ASSASINATION on Clay Davis and Avon had to pull him back), but Avon without Stringer would have brought the bodies and brought the heat on them and ended up in jail pretty soon anyway.

It's not like Rome or something where they had a huge amount of plot stuffed into the last few episodes - this is Treme. It has the exact same glacial fucking pace you either love or hate by this point, but just gives a little more closure to some stories and finishes them off. I'd definitely recommend it.
