Why did Howard kill Emmett? Emmett doomed himself when I embellished his bullshit story and said he wanted to take the gun from Howard to "get her to respect me." Howard probably interpreted that as a sign of sexual interest which threatened his dominance--I'm saying it wasn't the threat of violence against him, per se, that decided him to kill Emmett.

Not sure. Half-lies (the thing with Brittany) and self-flattering interpretations ("my wife turned my daughter against me. Some people don't want to be shown how to be safe") are the norm for him.
His story COULD be true. Unfortunately, the thing with Brittany forces us to conclude that it COULD be lie. I think the story would have been better if they didn't have that Brittany element at all. Howard's weird enough that his fixation on his daughter and other signs would have made him compellingly threatening without making it unambiguous about the NATURE of the threat.
Some people are just creepy. A story about a young woman in that situation slowly being driven to escape without ever being able to pin down "just exactly what's wrong with him" would have been better.
It also would have made the alien invasion reveal better, less of a "oh come on, and now THIS," and "fuck, maybe I was wrong about him."
