Honest question,
Is Zack Snyder a sociopath? He seems to genuinely not understand human emotion, and has a noticeable preoccupation with violence. That scene with Lois in the bathtub was shot like a horror movie. The light was moody, the music was tense. It seemed like Michael Myers was going to break into the room at any moment.
He takes Superman, perhaps the most sunny and optimistic capeshit character of all time, and turns him into a murderous psychopath without any sort of empathy. In the infamous "Martha" scene, a moment that should have demonstrated a genuine human connection between Batman and Superman, he just has Batman shout "WHY ARE YOU SAYING THAT NAME" loudly like a bumbling madman.
Maybe it's Aspergers. I don't know.

I'm not arguing that Superman should or shouldn't be anything in particular. I'm just saying he doesn't seem to "get" him. I don't mind the darker tone, but Snyder doesn't seem to understand how people behave. There are moments in this movie that are genuinely baffling to me. Like Superman saying, "what have you done to Lex." Cavill just sort of stands there and delivers the line blankly. And Cavill is a fine actor, so I gotta imagine it's a directing choice.

Zack Snyder is a believer in Objecitivist philosophy and has stated interest in making a Fountainhead movie before. In general even if he isn't a sociopath, many of the things his philosophy tells him to disregard could easily give that impression. His movies are frequently told only from the "strong guy" position, hence Snyder thinking that that deaths from manslaughter aren't as tragic as ones from out and out murder. Everyone who dies is just little, and Superman doesn't owe them anything, in Snyder's mind.
He's trying to portray an altruistic character while simultaneously holding a viewpoint that denigrates altruism.
That's why Snyder is preoccupied with just showing two strong characters duke it out rather than show that power being used for their benefit, like how there's not a single shot of rebuilding at the end of MoS. We can assume it's happening through montages in BvS, but it's obvious he has no joy depicting it when it does happen.
In Snyders world power exists to fight other powers and the people without power may as well not exist.

Batman discovered that Superman, despite being an alien, was more human than him. Earlier in the scene, Batman said the only thing that he was ever taught from his parents was in their deaths. He was so far gone from humanity that he realized the alien he deemed as unhuman was more human than he was. This was the entire point of the first knightmare scene when Batman goes to his parents grave and sees blood coming out of his mother's tombstone. He's trying to become human again but the Manbat creature that is a personification of his own lack of humanity drags him back. This is why he stares at the suit in the following scene with contempt.
Good thing he's directing and not acting or giving speeches. Focus on your strengths dummies.

He didn't drop the spear until Lane told him she is Clark's mother, that was what quickly humanized Superman in Batman's eyes. He weakened the god so much, he became a man. In his final moments, Clark is begging for his mother's life. Bruce realizes how much he fucked up, because Clark is still subject to very human culture and society he is. Despite being an alien, he is a slave to the same experience as Bruce, and any other man.
The fact that they had the same name is just convenience for the audience, an excuse to delve into Batman's issues. Bruce almost became the very thing that hates the most. He was at a crossroad, the very ones that defined his life, and he almost veered of onto wrong path, to become the very thing that created him in the first place.
