Just finished rewatching this after a long Star Trek drought.

How do you unfuck this show? It was pretty good up until the whole show became about: 1) Bajoran religion bullshit, 2) Odo falling in love for no reason, 3) Plot threads introduced in the seventh season taht the show didn't have time to resolve in a satisfying matter, 4) DS9 became about war, not about cool space exploration and adventures.

The show is pretty good until the last season and a half.

I liked the part where it wasn't Star Trek. Maybe the next series they do can be slapstick comedy or a ghost horror series.

The uniforms looked like shit in the later seasons.

That's actually a pretty decent metaphor for the show in general. It just got so drab and grey toward the end. Like it was ticking off boxes.
>>
>3) Plot threads introduced in the seventh season taht the show didn't have time to resolve in a satisfying matter
I saw the finale for the first time yesterday and it was astoundingly shitty. How did the writers think it was a good idea to resolve the two major plotlines they had been developing for 5-7 seasons with 5-minute asspulls, and then spent 20 minutes on a nostalgia montage?
>>
Dukat should have presented a legitimate claim against the Prophets. Maybe something like "Interference from non-linear beings enforces determinism and negates our free will".

Instead of Pah-Wraiths being PURE EVIL, their conflict should have been more nuanced. Instead of Dukat being their puppet, he could have been the one who convinced them to oppose the Prophets in the first place (it's not linear).

Instead of wanting to wipe out all life in the universe, Dukat/Pah-Wraiths should have wanted something simpler, like maybe their own wormhole. Have it lead to the Andromeda galaxy and you've got the setup for a new series on your hands.

Deep Space Nine did nothing wrong.

Except for introducing the Pah-Wraiths and turning the Bajoran religion into generic Good-Versus-Evil pap. And except for continuing the Mirror Universe storyline after its third episode. And except for removing the bisexuality aspect from Garak's character. And except for removing Kira from the O'Brien family's lives after she birthed their baby. And except for setting the final party in Vic's instead of Quark's. And except for removing Jadzia from the clip show. And except for setting up Ezri with Bashir instead of Jake. And except for introducing Solbor so late into the show, when he should have been a foil for Winn for years. And except for not including Worf's Enterprise friends in his wedding (Quark has holo-emitters in the bar, so they could have showed up as long-distance holo-transmissions).

And except for dropping Subcommander T'Rul from the show.

But other than that, Deep Space Nine did nothing wrong.

>4) DS9 became about war, not about cool space exploration and adventures.
>space exploration.

How do you go about "exploring space" when your permanent duty station is a non mobile deep space outpost?

Wars happened all the time in Star trek. the 4 years war ( war between federation and Klingon Empire, Romulan war, Cardassian war, etc, etc. We just never got to see wartime federation on screen until DS9.
>>
>>67664660
Voyager had the worst writing though. Even the actors on the show say that the writing was a disappointment. Even writers from the show say that the writing was a mess.

Being similar to TOS and TNG doesn't stop it from being the worst.

I have some bad news for you: You aren't the center of the universe. The world does not revolve around you. People have lives outside of you, and they don't live their lives according to what you think and say.

The people who own Star Trek say that DS9 is Star Trek, and so it is.

I understand that every night you cry bitch tears about how helpless and powerless you are to stop them, but that's just life.

I'll grand you the first one, but I hardly see how he was bland or hatable. Hell, one of the most beloved episodes was a Jake episode (albeit focused quite a bit on the old Jake played by a different actor).
Bashir was nearing Geordi levels of romantic incompetence until that final success, but if they had more time some kind of fling with Jake could have developed his character.
>>67665052
Half a season more could have solved so many of DS9's problems. They were just bringing the Romulans back into the picture with the alliance and Section 31 and then everything ends.
>>
>>67665708
Bashir was likable, and his bromances with Garak and Miles were epic. I found myself wanting him to succeed, and when he got together with Ezri I felt happy for him.

Nothing about Jake made me want to see more of him in any sort of subplot, especially a romance with the cutest character in the series. If this happened, I would have raged like a motherfucker

Deep Space 9 was great.

It's different from regular Trek, but that is okay, because each Trek is different in its own way.

I like to say TOS was the tall-tales of Trek, TNG was ideal of the federation/humanity, and DS9 is the reality. You get to see normal people, live normal lives, in the Trek universe, and that is awesome! DS9 dove head first into the parts of the Trek universe that we're completely untouched. We got to sympathize with people that hated the Federation. We got to see the Federation commit fucking war crimes and then their best attempts at justifying them.

Odo was a hilarious character that was tons of fun. As the 'odd' character that had to follow up Data, I'd say that shapeless mother fucker did a pretty damn good job. The bucket jokes. The fucking timeless Odo-Quark episodes. Yea his dating bits were insufferable but every Trek has its low points.

And fucking Weyoun. GARAK. For fucks sake, it had Iggy Pop.

Real talk though, DS9 ruined Worf's character.

Yeah, the DS9 writers completely fucked up on Worf. He was my favorite character in TNG, and in DS9 he became a one-dimensional, humorless shadow of himself

It's weird because they do a much better job in general with character writing compared to other Trek shows, but with Worf it's like they had no clue except "Now we have Worf from TNG, he was popular right? Ratings when?"

I'm rewatching DS9 right now.
It's the best Trek, maybe tied with TNG.
It's the war stuff and plotlines that shakes it up. Voyager goes back to the TNG "freak of the week" formula and it's horrible.
I like that DS9 isn't just TNG 2.0. Like Voyager is.

Also, Enterprise is good too. Especially Season 3 and 4.

Basically every Kira episode then.

Seeing protagonists on DS9 fight each other constantly is what elevates it above TNG where everyone is so fucking civil to each other all the time.
I like Kira. She's no Ro, tho. Based Ro...

DS9 was a bit of a letdown from someone coming straight out of TNG, but it was fine. Sure I missed the exploration, but not every show needed to be the same.
The main problem was that it was followed by two subpar "exploration" show, which leaves a bad taste in the mouth

>*beep*
>Hi Nerys, it's me again, your dear friend Dukat. Listen, can I borrow some latinum? I'm brokering a deal with an exiled prince of the Nij'eryan Empire to restore Cardassia to its former glory. All we need is some initial seed money to pay his administrative fees and then we can access the full balance of his bank accounts, and his gracious lordship will give me the funds to make Cardassia rise triumphant once again. Contact me as soon as you can so we can transfer your latinum to me. Love, Gul Dukat. Uh, er, ah, I mean, sincerely, Gul Dukat.

A pity he never had that much personality in the show. There was that episode where he met his people's gods, and the one where he was in a boxing match, and that's pretty much it.
>>
>>67670907

Well, apparently the actor was outspoken against the idiotic racism toward native americans that was going on, as well as that the inclusion of Seven of Nine turned the show into largely a Captain Janeway / Seven of Nine vehicle. So the produces just sorta dropped him after Season 4 onwards because they didn't like his attitude.

It shows too. There's very few "Chakotay" episodes in Season 5-7. There's several episodes he's just not in at all.
>>
>>67664588
I just started watching this a few weeks ago and I have to say it's pretty damn entertaining.

Why does /tv/ hate it so much?
>>
I have a question.

In the episode where Enterprise is being perused by some aliums at warp they talk about shooting the Phase Cannons at them.

I thought you couldn't shoot phaser type weapons at warp speeds?
>>

(Not who you replied to) I'm going through Voyager again right now. I roll my eyes a lot more with this series than any other, yet I still enjoy it most of the time.

DS9 starts slow as fuck (as does any trek series), but damn if it didn't get wonderful. I love how, to me anyway, it ends up really developing the character stories more deeply cause they aren't exploring and coming across new stuff every episode. Weakest part for me is Avery's overacting, BUT he is a good captain nonetheless. Also, liked Quark and Garak the best. Main thing that bothered the hell out of me was how whiny the Bajorans are. I hate them as a character race SO much.

TNG will always be my favorite though.

For something a little different, why don't we talk about best musicals?
My favourites would probably be:

Live-Action
>The Producers 2005
>Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street 2007
>Mary Poppins 1964
>Moulin Rouge! 2001
>Grease 1978

Animated:
>The Lion King 1994
>South Park: Bigger Longer & Uncut 1999
>Aladdin 1992
>The Nightmare Before Christmas 1993
>The Little Mermaid 1989

It's not TNG/TOS. That's basically why people hate any Trek.

Enterprise is definitely the weakest Trek, but the first two seasons show real promise. Then they start using the Temporal Cold War and/or Space 9/11 (Xindi) too much, and bring the Trip & T'Pol relationship up too much. Season 4 was better, but there were too many multi part episodes.
>>
>>67673971
>DS9 is a character show
I don't mind that. Quark/Odo and Bashir/Garak, those were really great combinations. Some of the characters just changed in weird ways (Kira, Odo, Worf).

I agree that Avery Brooks flew off the handle in the last few seasons and started chewing scenery at near Shatner levels, but it usually wasn't unbearable.

The Dominion War just rubbed me the wrong way, I don't know.

Vic being shoved into the show at the last minute (basically taking over the function that Quark's bar did) was weird. I liked Vic's character a lot, but he seemed almost unnecessary.

I still contend that the last season and a half/last two seasons throw this show off.
>>
>>67671797
That's dumb as shit. His character had potential. He was a Maquis captain, a direct result of the Cardassian treaty, not to mention a boxing enthusiast and a fairly religious Native American. He should've had way more depth than they gave him.

I disliked how he became an accessory for 7 of 9 in the last season or so, for virtually no reason.

Thought it was boring

The fact the "new idea" was to go back in time to when they had shitty technology and are exploring areas that are already exposed in earlier series

Maybe I'll try watching it again tho. Im on season 3 of DS9 and I'm not impressed
>>
>>67676140
>when they had shitty technology
Except that the technology level is basically the same as in later series.

Phase pistols/cannons? No difference between them and phasers.
Hull plating? Functionally no real difference between this and shields.
Grappling hook? There's maybe one episode where it's not as useful as a tractor beam.
Transporters? It takes about two episodes for the crew to not be afraid of them anymore.
Universal translator? Thank goodness we still have that.

Just like Voyager, Enterprise is all about betraying its own premise.
