I would say better is the least reprehensible character of the main cast. She was a devoted wife and decent mother right up until her husband was unfaithful to her and until her daughter started acting out after the divorce.

Although it was kind of selfish, it was selfish in the sense that he wanted to be in denial about it, or at least distract himself from reality. She was the only one who he felt really cared about him so he didn't handle her loss well.
