Rather than a traditional "big bad" reveal, we get something much more interesting, for a number of reasons:
1. Luthor's speech about bells alerting things in the stars and darkness of space gives a creepy Lovercraftian vibe.
2. The weird violin music.
3. Lex's room at the end being a crime scene, increasing the impression of something being wrong
4. Instead of seeing Darkseid or a spaceship we instead zoom in slowly on a painting of a demon. Instead of setting up a comic book villain the message is that evil itself is coming to Earth.
