Worth mentioning that in addition to Belle openly disliking Gaston, she's actually an outcast in the eyes of the rest of the village as well. That Gaston was able to convince the others to risk their lives for this girl and that they so willingly followed him to certain death for such a reluctant cause speaks volumes about his role in their community.
