Eh, even in the books there's not much depth.
The biggest thing about magic in the books was that you have to know circumstances if you wanna perform stuff well. There are like hundreds of things you have to watch out for like positions of stars, closest body of water, phase of the moon, position of planets, a whole lotta shit. They showed a little bit of it in the episode I think after they went to Mayakosky. In the books that was pretty much the whole reason for going to him in the first place and they had to make knowing the circumstances become second nature, not something to think about and perform the same nail spell, all the time, every day and of course each time had different circumstances.
Books didn't expand much on the other branches of magic like nature or whatever, nor what the other people's disciplines were besides Alice, Penny and eventually Quentin. Didn't even do much with their disciplines except Penny in the first book and Quentin much later on in the third book.
Book and as a result the show is really about how magic doesn't magically, pun intended, fix your life or your problems. You're still the same fucked up person and so it looks more at the people who use magic, instead of the magic itself.

In the book he was detached from reality on booze and drugs. Margot-Janet takes advantage of him because she Is fucked up inside and in her search for love has to try to steal it from others. My fellow book readersAnyone else feel Alice equaling and taking out Martin was complete bullshit? I mean, Martin traded his humanity to a God and became what should be a demi god, dude got powerful enough that Ember thought he was capable of Umber and actually had done it, and powerful enough to trap Ember. But is only roughly equal to Alice cause she's just that trained and good at traditional Brakebills shit. I mean that's ridiculous. Even by the third she's still better at shit than Quentin who by then was almost 30, was good enough to be a teacher at Brakebills and who was previously good enough years before to do and figure out stuff even Alice couldn't like trapping a photon and being able to observe it.
Changing that one thing is what I'm looking forward to in the show.Hope it's a lot more of a group effort and that Niffin is the only way Alice can even hope to match him, much less beat him

I would say Q who ends up creating multiple worlds and rebuilds fillory is in a small class of people, Q, Julia and probably Penny at that point, I think once Alice de-niffins she isn't as strong but incredibly versatile with her knowledge so the core group of characters are essentially demigods in their various ways.
Mak goes out of his way to tell Q how shit he is because he wants him to become better, that is his whole riff. Suffer to become great. Becoming a god isn't for the huckleberry's out there.

I mean suffering and pain powering up your magic is fine, but dude has decades and powerful enough to trap a god and be taken as able to kill a god, and yet they fight toe to toe.I don't think Q is really demigod though, sure he's capable of great things and he's passionate and creative since he was for example smart enough to evade Alice in the fake world and think to trap her Niffin in the cacodemon seal thing and then successfully pull off the spell for making her into a human, but he still needed Mayakosky's coins which have a LOT of magic in them, to pull off those big feats like making the magical world or turning Alice back into human form. And he also needed to kill Ember and Umber to get the powers to fix Fillory so it wasn't all him, even killing Ember and Umber required alice making him into a dragon and then using Mayakosky's coins to make a weapon capable of killing a God
