Why can't cinema handle deep, complex storylines and issues like this?
Is it because the audience can't handle something so challenging or is it an inherent limitation of the medium?

le robot man has to track down le evil guerilla terroristm group that took over liberty city island but WHOA! the terrorists are actually the good guys being targeted by the I-L-L-U-M-I-N-A-T-I!!!! your brother JD Denton is working for the terrorists apparently but holy shit !! he's not your brother you aren't even a human you are a clone!! shiitt!!!

I love Deus Ex but it's not some grand masterpiece of storytelling. It just has a really interesting world and fully rounded characters, and dabbles in real world themes that give it weight.

I mean the game ends with by turning the (thus far compelling) antagonist into a dastardly Saturday morning cartoon villain boss fight. It has the same problem as Bioshock, it can't avoid the standard trappings of the medium.

Deus Ex isn't even that deep, unless we're talking about some very specific and optional moments that don't represent the whole.

>/tv/ tries discussing vidya
>>
>>67608446
Then again, the same can be said about most movies. How many times has a compelling, three dimensional villain been sacrificed to an inane showdown just so we can get the lazy, happy ending we've been trained to expect? At least as many times as in video games.

Nolan would be the ideal director for a Deus Ex film because of all the pseudo-intellectual and entry-level philosophical arguments expressed through expository dialogue.

Also, he can somewhat direct action and is great at world-building.

And they draw on past writings and so on, just because X 'draws on' Y, doesn't mean X isn't original.

>>
>>67614548
Are you somehow implying that philip predicted 9/11?
Also when did he talk about memes? I admit, I haven't read all philip has written, but I've never seen him talk about evolution of ideas as a virus or anything like that.
>>
>>67614602
Because it dealt with the skepticism but not with the deconstruction associated with it.

>>67614721
But when X draws on Y it should bring new ideas to be considered original. MGS and Deus Ex did nothing of the such.

>>67614784
>Are you somehow implying that philip predicted 9/11?
see >>67614466
>The sky will burn at forty-five degrees latitude, Fire approaches the great new city Immediately a huge, scattered flame leaps up When they want to have verification from the Normans.
Did Nostradamus predict 9/11 too?
>Also when did he talk about memes?
Not Philip, but Dawkins talked about that way before MGS when he published The Selfish Gene.
>>
>>67607867
If you tried to cram pretty much every conspiracy theory in existence into a single movie you'd get a fuckin mess...
>>
>>67615124
>see >>67614466
How does the fact that the prediction isn't baseless deligitimize it? What the fuck is the argument there?
>Not Philip, but Dawkins talked about that way before MGS when he published The Selfish Gene.
He codified memes and their function, he didn't actually talk about them in the sense mgs did as a future self-preserving ideology and phenomena. Also I think the meme talk was mostly memeposting in itself.
>>
>>67607867
>>67615188
Also: The most interesting aspect of the game is the great freedom of choice you're offered and the fact that pretty much all of your actions have some sort of consequence – which was a pretty novel idea when the game came out (enter the ladies' bathroom and your boss will confront you with it – just to name one popular example).
Movie's aren't about the viewer's choices though.

>How does the fact that the prediction isn't baseless deligitimize it? What the fuck is the argument there?
It's not a prediction, it's mere coincidence and I'm pretty sure the devs stated just that.

>He codified memes and their function, he didn't actually talk about them in the sense mgs did as a future self-preserving ideology and phenomena. Also I think the meme talk was mostly memeposting in itself.
Maybe you should read his book before commenting on it. He used the term meme to describe a means of cultural transmission analogous to the gene. There's also his essay 'Viruses of the Mind' that describes the propagations of religious beliefs and behaviours as a memetic virus.

Greatest game ever made, but not an incredible story and the dialogue is pretty weak. That reveal that the UNATCO base is inside the MJ12 bunker though.. great stuff.

Deus Ex had a level of choice consequence, combat approach variety, upgrade system, and damage system that is to this day unmatched which is more a condemnation of the failure to build on what made this game amazing than an appraisal.
