That's how it's written in all the novels.
What's wrong with it? It's a nickname and it spells what they're saying. You don't use figures ("37") in written dialogue, you use words ("thirty-seven").

Their names in Georges very first draft were Threepio and Artoo. Written exactly like that, so I'm guessing it was the same when said like that in the final draft. Not the people's fault, again, blame Lucas.
