I don't think it was a bad idea per se, where they botched it was in the overreliance on CG(bad CG) and by constantly bombarding us with giant epic vistas and architecture so you become numb to the wonder. At least that's the impression I'm getting from the trailers. There's a reason Minas Tirith and the halls of moria inspire awe in LOTR, and that's because they use awe sparingly.
