So what exactly was the message of this movie? Just greed is bad? Because Daniel Plainview doesn't seem like an ordinary person you could set up as an example of what greed does to a person.

No real takeaway message I dont think
Just a story about greed personified and how ugly (yet somehow appealing it is)
It's just a portrayal of a man's downward spiral.

No deep message just shows the effect that greed and power can affect and change how a man interacts with the world around him.

People let's their desires consume them
Its about capatlism replacing christianity in america
>what was the message of this movie?
how is 7th grade treating you?
No real moral or message, it's a character piece. Plainview is a complete asshole sociopath, but at least he is honest with people about his motivations and nets some positive development in the world (turning dying farm towns into prosperous oil towns). Eli presents himself as a prophet and healer, but only wants to get rich and contributes nothing to society.
Daniel Plainview is obsessed with power and stops at nothing to expand his oil empire. For him it's not solely about business and wealth but he also wants to defeat his competitors and gets pleasure from doing so
