I honestly thought seasons 4-6 were the strongest three. Lex starts going super evil, we get Clark dealing with losing people a lot more, the justice league guys start rocking up, Jensen Ackles came in for a great one-season character, and we also got Zod and Bizarro.
Everything before then is just freak-of-the-week stuff, which is fun but I like a bit more of a narrative through my shows.
And obviously everything after 6, when Gough and Millar both left and Rosenbaum left with them, the show went to utter shit.
