I'm from india.

The "movies" that indian "cinema" churns out can't be called movies in my opinion. They're literally worse than garbage. I use the word literally because I genuinely and non-ironically would rather watch a pile of garbage than those travesties that they call films.

Let is analyze the two side by side:

Pile of garbage

>stinks but watching literal garbage isn't very harmful.
>does not conform to an overly simplistic formula
>has different elements
>is complex enough to be viewed and analyzed for some time
>more visually appealing than indian films
>adheres to real life physics and is grounded in reality

indian films
> watching them lowers IQ. they are so fucking dumb that you will feel yourself get stupider while watching these movies
>almost always some retarded bullshit overly simplistic good vs bad drama or love story or action flick with shitty action
>no. hero is really good, has hot love interest and beats up bad guys. fin.
>a 2 year old can make art more complex than indian films
>gives zero shits about what is real. filmmakers will put in the most retarded, stupid fucking shit to make it appear "cool" or make the protagnist win.

I'm not talking about satyajit ray or the good old times when indian films had some semblance of artistic merit.

I'm talking about today's movies. They're so fucking shit.
In fact there was a time when indian movies were getting better.

Then this one movie came out: Wanted. It was dumb as fuck but had this retarded over the top action shit that earned a fuckton of money. Since then it has only been a race to produce the stupidest, over-the-top formulaic bullshit that will earn most money.

Fuck. I fucking hate bollywood so much. I honestly want every single person associated with that cancerous tumor of an industry to get tortured brutally until they die with their own cocks stuffed down their throats.

They're responsible for fucking destroying and stifling any chance indian cinema had to make an impact.
>>
>>67426176
Depends on which Indians.

Indians in the slums? Well obviously. The Indians living along the Ganges, that still think its sacred and thus defecate there? Well sadly.

But the more affluent areas are doing alright. Which is a problem, though, because the income gap within India is widening quite bad
>>
Because Indian cinema is absolute trash. It's so fucking bad. I'm not saying that NOTHING good has ever come out of India, I've heard that Satyajit Ray's movies are great although I haven't seen them. But India's yearly production of quality film is literally on a lower level than random Eastern European countries, and for a nation with the largest film industry in the entire world that's just fucking inexcusable.

It genuinely makes me mad that there's clearly so much passion for filmmaking in India and yet almost no one appears to be capable of making a good movie.

>>
>>67426213
You're no real Indian.

Either that, or you're some self-hating type who buys into the white man says. In which case, I'd say stick up for yourself.
>>
I think it might be related to money laundering or another similar practice which encourages quantity over quality. Just a personal theory with little evidence.

Recently, some rich Indian guy came to my backwards-ass country (Serbia) to make a film about one of our national folk legends. All the trailers and stuff looked godawful, and I met some of the people who were working on it. They said the Indian threw a ridiculous amount of money towards the project, despite it being awfully banal and unprofessional. Sounds like foul play to me, but it could be that he was just eccentric.

Who knows though, maybe they just have very different standards. The guy who worked on the movie told me that the Indian guy's father was very disappointed with the early version of the movie. He said the CGI and everything looked great (it looked awful), but that the movie was shit because there was no singing and dancing in it.

Thing is, if its an Indian movie, it doesn't matter the genre, it doesn't matter the budget, it doesn't matter the subject, it will NEED a dance number. At least one.

Even Slumdog Millionaire, a British film (filmed in india) had a dance number. Dance is to the Indians what Rice is to the chinks and fried chicken is to the Blacks - can't live without it.

I mentioned Lagaan. And film festivals are bound to have at least one arthouse film from India that no one talks about for the precise reason that its arthouse. And Enthiran was a bit of a meme on 4chan, back when it came out.

And on that note: why does this board not have foreign film festival threads? For the precise reason that its arthouse and inaccessible. It's part satirical Indian film making fun of the moronically delusional propaganda being pumped out in India at the moment about how India will be a post industrial super power rivaling the US and China in 10 years, despite the fact that industry in the country is laughable, half the population are still medieval peasants drinking cow piss and chasing out witches, corruption and neopostim is so out of control that people are literally dying because of it, the infrastructure is so bad that people literally shit in the streets and steal power even in the capital and social standards are so backwards that racism and sexism are considered important core values in many areas.

I'm sorry bruh. I mean, you got me at Lord of the Rings. But Braindead? Fucking seriously?!! Even Jackson would admit that was a campy B-film.

Your other two flicks are fine, though.

No.

Which part of India are you from?

I imagine the supposed streets people talk about are in the slum areas
>>

If you read the post I was originally replying to, the fag stipulated that wuxia and thrillers were off limits because he's a limp dick who feels absolutely no shame at trying to cook the books when he knows he's wrong. As you can also see here >>67427610
apparently HK doesn't count as chinese either for reasons.

If wuxia and crime were on the bill, then CTHD, hero, raise the red latern etc. would all be on the list too.
>>
>>67427292
I went and saw a few films while I was in Chennai and it wasn't as bad as that, but there's a designated band of whooping young men who completely ruin the movie.

They also have commercial breaks.

>go watch Indian movie
>Apu and Temple of Rats
>think it will be a rip off of you know what
>actually it is not
>the movie starts with Apu waking up
>he has to shit
>he eats a bow of rice with his bare hands
>leaves home
>gets an overloaded train
>there's so much people the train breaks
>has to walk 4 miles of designated shitting streets
>he takes a dump since he's there anyway
>finally arrives at telemarketing job
>the next hour of the movie is Apu making creep comments to woman in the phone and internet
>finally it ends
>the movie pauses for the obligatory dance scene
>Apu is heading for the temple of rats
>he sees a woman getting raped
>the actor portraying the rapist is M. Night Shayamalan, neat cameo
>finally some action, our hero Apu is here to save the day!
>no, he actually joins the rape
>Apu has to shit again
>finally arrives at the temple
>there's people worshiping rats like some satanist temple
>Apu will give it to them!
>actually no, he starts to worshipping the rats himself
>ending dance scene while the credits roll
The worst thing is the movie is five hours long
>>
>>67427446
That wasn't actually me (I'm the kiwi you were replying to).

I was going to say LoTR (all 6 of them), but like you said that wasn't pure NZ (it was a joint NZ/US film, as opposed to the last samurai which was a US film filmed in NZ).

Ones you may have heard of:
Heavenly creatures
Once were warriors
Boy
King kong (though kind of the same deal as LotR)
What we do in the shadows

We do have some pretty good lesser known stuff like Out of the Blue, a movie based on a killing spree some guy went on here starring Karl urban, the dude who played judge dread.

Bangalore

Honestly, i haven't seen much of the rural side to be an expert.

But designated shitting streets is definitely a meme.

All slum areas i know have a toilet.

And shitting streets are not designated, thats just stupid unrealistic
>>
>>67427758
>>raise the red latern

No bruh.

No crime was actually committed in that movie. Aside from supposed adultery and murder.

But you can't prove that now, can you?

Thats why Raise the red lantern is p. good senpai. The best parts keep you guessing and are purposefully vague

Why the fuck can't we have commercial breaks.

Why can't I stop in the middle of my movie to go to the toilet, or get me some more popcorn.

Or some crabs legs.

Fucking backwards Western countries.
>>
>>67428023
Just to give you an idea what they are.
Heavenly creature is about a murder that happened here, starring a young Kate Winslet. Once were warriors is about a Maori family in the 80s, it's pretty fucking heavy so be prepared (it also produced plenty of well known memes here).
What we do in the shadows is a mockumentry comedy about a group of vampires (I haven't seen it).
Boy is a comedy about a young Maori kid growing up in bumfucking nowhere, pretty gud, was really big here.
Also some guy mentioned The Piano which I haven't seen but have heard good things.

Personally, I think that most Indian film production companies are unwilling to take risks into making films that don't involve romance and singing. This is probably because they know that most people want these types of films. A vast majority of movie-goers in India simply go to movies to turn off their brains and escape from reality. The fact that "masala" movies - which involve bits of romance, action, and drama - are by far the most popular film genre in India indicates that the masses simply like this genre and production companies are simply providing what the masses want. This is a culturally entrenched thing and this is the reason why nothing good comes out of Indian cinema.

When you have this kind of a national mindset there will absolutely be no creativity in filmmaking. Film genres that exist in Hollywood like sci-fi, western, biopics, historical, fantasy are extremely rare in India cinema. You'll never see movies like Mad Max, Sicario, and Bone Tomahawk coming from India. So, when the entire film industry is set up in a way such that masala movies are an easy cash cow and money for making movies is spread over hundreds of companies the result is movies being very similar to one another with very little creativity.

Most of these films like films in the usa are made for the general audience. My guess on the singing and dancing is that it is used culturally/or as a barrier to let the view know its not real life ( Captain America CW scene where comically people say hail hydra ). Add into the mix multiple languages/regional cultural barriers and most of these flicks would be different.
I expect a change in indian films when the plight of the poor is reduced and its gdp approach somewhere close to where china is now (est 2040).
>>
But why do they shit on the street?

They were filmed partially in South Africa, but that's about as far as their connection to Africa goes. They were funded entirely by Hollywood.
>>
I lived in a place in florida that started to get tons of indians coming in for tech support jobs.

I started smelling the curry around my apartment complex and noticed it was almost always sold out at my local grocery store. So I found out when they get shipments in and then would get there after they stocked it and put it in one basket and hide it behind a bunch of toilet paper.
