That movie was good because it was about the characters, not the monsters (which were rarely seen).
But in a Godzilla movie with literally no characters besides retarded nameless army guys doing boring shit and walking around with 4 minutes of cutaway Godzilla shots throughout the movie, you're left pissed off and bored because you don't care about these cardboard cutouts running around spouting army jargon, you want to see Godzilla.
There's 2 ways to do a monster movie.
>1.
Pacific Rim style. Have some somewhat likeable tropey characters to carry the plot, but to compensate for a lackluster storyline/characters, pack it full of ballbusting monster action.
>2.
Cloverfield/Goji'54 style. Heavily character-focused, main character usually tied to the monster(s) in some way (like Cranston in G'2014 which they decided to throw away 10 minutes in). Little by little, you're fed more of what the monster looks like and what it behaves like. Sort of like in the scene in 2014 when the Japanese guy told you about Godzilla being a primordial "alpha predator" or whatever, except not everything you need to know in one stupid, 2-minute expository scene. Make that part of the adventure of the movie, finding out more about what the monster is and what it does. Then maybe have one gratuitous monster shot at the end.
Godzilla 2014 was like a 'option 2' style monster movie, except you're fed exactly what Godzilla is almost immediately and there's no characters to follow. It was comprised of all the worst attributes of options 1 and 2 which is why it sucked.

Kong vs Godzilla is an inherrently stupid concept. There's just no good way to do it.
Kong and Godzilla re no where near the same league. Kong is 25 feet tall. They made him 50 foot tall once and no one liked it because it was way too big. Godzilla was originally 50 meters tall, and Legendary Godzilla is over 100 meters. Even ignoring the massive size difference, Godzilla's on another level. Kong is strong, agile, and smart. But Godzilla's just as smart, and one hell of a lot stronger for their respective sizes. On top of that, he's near indestructible, has a huge healing factor, has atomic breath, and emits massive amounts of radiation.
Sure, you CAN make Kong 100 meters tall. You can make him way more strong and fast and indestructible. But then he's not King Kong anymore. He's just a big, incredibly generic and boring Kaiju. Fucking King Ceasar is more interesting. You can't do King Kong and have him be the size of a sky-scraper, it just doesn't work. There's nothing to do with him at that size.
You either have King Kong, and do a cool King Kong story, or you have an unbelievably bland and boring giant monster to fight Godzilla, when you could have much more interesting opponents for him like Gamora or King Ghidorah.

It's bizarre. An interesting read but it doesn't even feel like it's in the same universe as the movie. Their is a cult that worships the beast and through some dna magic fusing shit, a human boy is able to control Clover. He uses it to unleash his teen angst on Chinkland. I remember it being a pretty fun read. It even expanded on some things such as how the special features on the DVD mention how Clover eats with tubes that come out of him when he doesnt use his mouth which we actually see him do.
