In Star Wars they travel by 'jumping' to coordinates. The map of the galaxy is just a bunch of safe coordinates where if you jump to them, you won't jump into a star or planet and explode. There is nothing to indicate any reason NOT to go in there, either, so whereas a lack of water sources might make sense for failing to explore a desert, there's nothing to show that that area is particularly dangerous or inhospitable.
