Whoever owned the Superman Returns suit let the show use it, but it didn't fit Tom Welling or something. That's probably why he had it in a glass cage for so long without wearing it.
Also the original creators laid down a core rule for the show, which was "no flights, no tights". I guess since it was the finale they decided "fuck that, he's Superman now".
