Towards the end of the war, he bagan to quetion Windu and the Jedi, and was caved into the darkside to save his wife. However, the darkside drove him mad, and he attacked the person he was trying to save out of sheer rage.
When Obi-Wan left him to die, lost his body, and told that he killed Padma, the only emotion left for him was hatred. This is when he truly became a machine both inside and out.

Who was Darth Vader in the first Star Wars film? Just a big scary bad guy, but the film isn't about him at all. Then he got popular and sold lots of toys and suddenly it was "his saga"

Throught New Hope and Empire, we see him do alot of evil shit and be a tottale boss. However, underneath it all... once he finds out Luke is his son... he want's him for himself for his own selfish ambitions. But I think sometime during Return of the Jedi... he realities that his kids are the last link he has to the naive, caring rebel who wanted to bring peace to the galaxy and be live happily with the women he loved. By saving Luke, he casts aside Vader and becomes Anacin once more, litterly dying for his own sin's to save his so (ZOMGA Meahssia undertones).
And that is why the I-VI will always be the best unless Disney treats the story as a saga and not a cash cow.

Vader was just a henchmen character originally. You saw this from the fact that Tarkin bosses him around. Yet in Empire he's killing his men left and right and giving all the orders.
Lucas... like us fell in love with Vader, and decided to expand his backstory through the sequels and the prequels. Star Was is essentially how anyone with a good heart can become a moister if they let emotion consume them, but that emotions are also what make us human. Balance in the force. These themes might not have been planned, and he made shit up as he went along, but honestly... do you think George R.R. Martin planned to have Thenon lose his dick back in the Ice and Fire books.
Sequels and prequels tie and weave the story together with what already in place. And if they add to the originals, even if it wasn't the original intent, that's okay, so long as it makes scene.

Luke himself may in the new canon be more powerful then Yoda, and may have discovered new secrets about the force that even the Jedi from the prequels didn't know about.

If shit doesn't build or connect, then it just becomes like everthing else. Star War's movies aren't isolated Indian Jones adventures... there character development, lore, and world building. The story is built on bonds and connections.

Why is Angry Birds one of the most played games of all times? Is it because it's such a quality masterpiece? That nothing can ever top it? No, it's popular because it's popular. It's the echo chamber effect. Nobody can predict what goes "viral" or becomes popular, as much as they'd like to, there's always 100 competing products on the market no matter what decade you're in, and ONE of them gets lucky enough to win the social lottery and becomes the first big "popular" thing of its type. And because it's popular, people talk it about. That pushes it out more into the media. And more people hear about it.
