is the comedy genre dead in film?
Comedies from the last 10 years I have enjoyed are:
Walk Hard
The Other Guys
Semi-Pro
Tucker and Dale vs Evil
Is anything else even good?
>>67327816
oh and Borat was funny I guess
The other guys is legit the funniest movie I've seen in a decade, I can't even think of another movie that has come close to making me laugh that much. Maybe 21/22 jump street
in bruges
shaun of the dead
I was somewhat disappointed in the movie because i expected something deeper and pacing was weird, but as a straight up comedy - it was funny as fuck
>>67327984
>in bruges
That movie was a little dark for me, the antagonist was too explosive for my taste.
infanticide is not funny either.
>>67327897
thanks for the f-shack - love Dirty Mike and the boys.
Tropic Thunder
Observe and Report
kind of liked 30 minutes or less.
Honestly the past 3-5 years has had the biggest dryspell. Probably has something to do with internet humor just being better than anything a movie can do at this point
comedy is a pleb genre
>>67328187
Observe and Report is fucking great.
Hot Rod is a good one too
>>67327816
Four Lions was the last thing I remember laughing out loud to
>that's not a bear, it's chewbacca
>>67327816
In the Loop is Dr. Strangelove-tier
What We Do in the Shadows
Seth Rogen and Rated R comedies ruined it.
It's all just cursing, gross out humor, and dude weed jokes.
the three flavors cornetto trilogy (especially hot fuzz) are all GOAT
FACT: The best and most intelligent comedies have always been G or PG rated because they weren't allowed to go too far into gross out potty humor and non-stop sex and swearing. PG-13 comedies are serviceable, but R rated comedies are the worst.

adams apples is rated R and thats pretty good danish comedy
>>67328633
hot fuzz>Shaun>world's end
wish we had more shows like spaced
>>67328671
ok give us some examples instead of just giving an opinion which is only slightly connected to what op is asking about
>>67328456
I second this, watch this. It reminds me of Zoolander (the humour/some of the idiotic characters) but gritty and terrorists instead of male models.
I've watched at least 5 times.
>>67327816
>Observe and Report
So surprisingly good
>>67328583
Yes, and yet he managed a few good performances. He ended up flanderizing himself though.
>>67328583
>>67328671
You said it once, you don't need to say it again.
get him to the greek is great.
I can really only recommend this if you already like Albert Brooks and his kind of comedy. Norms won't get it.
>>67328533
Seconding. That movie is hilarious
>>67329034
fuck off jesus christ.
What We Do in the Shadows was great.
A lot of the good comedy is no longer wide-release
>>67329141
You fuck off, retard.
>see movie that's got Jaime from GoT in it on netflix
>decide to give it a go
>turns out it's a Norwegian movie about a self-concious manlet
>continue watching anyway
>it's a funny dark comedy
>has me genuinely laughing instead of chuckling and getting tired of the drawn-out jokes like most comedies have me doing these days
>google it just now to remember the name to give a tip about it(Headhunters)
>imdb says it's not a dark comedy
>it's a crime drama thriller
>it's a crime drama thriller according to wikipedia as well
>it's based on a crime drama thriller book
>tfw you can sit through a comedy without breaking a smile but can't resist laughing at pictures of aidan gillen
>>67328233
This is honestly the answer
>>67329020
I thought so too when first watching it, but then I rewatched it and couldn't fucking stand it. Surprised the hell out of me.
McDonagh is a very divisive director on this board but both In Bruges and Seven Psychopaths we're immensely entertaining.

You guys are AMPAS voters, aren't you?
>>67328812
Groundhog Day, Ghostbusters 1 and 2, Back to the Future Trilogy, Princess Bride, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Enchanted, Beetlejuice, Napoleon Dynamite, Spaceballs, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Gremlins 1 and 2, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure/Bogus Journey, Three Amigos, Clue, Murder By Death.
That's all I feel like writing, but I could keep going. All these movies are better than any R rated comedy.
Edgar Wright is the only director who knows how to do comedy.
50/50 was pretty good for a structural drama w/ comic dressing. Seth Rogen's character rubbing it in Bryce Howard's character's face was funny.
>>67327816
22 Jump street was fun
>>67329392
hi Tony
>>67327816
Bridesmaids was good 2bh
>>67328789
correct order anon
>>67329186
scandinavian humor is weird as fuck man, its like living in northern europe just automatically makes you a humorous cynic
>>67329333
you had to reach back 3 decades and half of those movies still suck
there aren't many good R rated comedies because there aren't many good movies period
What did you guys think of Holy Water?
Backstory: a group of criminals steal Viagra, but they get rid of it in order not to get caught, unfortunately inside the water supply of an village full of old people.
>>67329333
>My Big Fat Greek Wedding
That was a comedy?
>>67328533
Still haven't seen it
>>67329392
This, and Phil Lord/Chris Miller
>>67329554
So they end up murdering a village-full of people through unsuspecting viagra-overdoses? Sounds fucking dark.
Tucker and Dale vs Evil is great
>>67329695
Nope, just loads of erections and scared grannies. Also known as Hard Times in Amerifatland.
Grabbers was a solid horror-comedy, I thought. But then horror-comedies can't really be ranked with regular comedies because the viewer's inclination towards the horror bits plays too big a role.
>>67328397
Patrician taste. Hot Rod is amazing.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zs60CqBYnvg
>>67328583
The Jump Street movies are great though. I think Lord and Miller are the best comedy directors around right now.
>>67328687
>>67329186
Yeah what >>67329491 said. Scandinavian humor is often pretty dark.
I've seen the movie aswell anon, it had some hilarious moments in it.
Scandinavian filmmakers in general tend to make some pretty GOAT shit by the way, Jagten, a 1000 times goodnight are also top tier movies and its indisputable that their version of the girl with the dragon tattoo was way better than the rehashed American piece of crap.
>>67330068
>its indisputable that their version of the girl with the dragon tattoo was way better than the rehashed American piece of crap.
Only non-swedes believe this, because they can't tell that 90% of the actors aren't giving a shit about actually acting. If it wasn't for the acting problem then there'd be a discussion.
I enjoy stand-up comedy, but there's something about comedy movies that I just can't stand. I don't think I even laughed at Four Lions, Death at a Funeral or Monty Python.
Is this a common thing or am I just a joyless cunt?
>>67330203
Interesting, I'm like the opposite of you. Standup comedy never does much for me.
I actually enjoyed This is 40
>>67330203
It's hard to make a narrative that runs at least an hour and a half and is consistently funny while having some kind of focus and unity.
>>67330068
Jagten was OK; Mikkelson was really good in it and that's it. Dragon Tattoo is the worst shit ever written and Fincher deserves a Nobel for making something watchable out of it,
>>67330398
Seriously? Leslie Mann's shrill, horrible voice is like a drill going into my brain.
>>67327816
Mordecai (2014) Brilliant and Johnny Depp pulls off another classic.
