JCS succeeds because Webber's loopy indulgences in this case come together in a way that's electrifying instead of enervating like in pretty much everything else he's done.

Hamilton succeeds because it's meticulously crafted and obsessed over by a proper genius rather than a frog faced brit hack who caught lightning in a bottle and then wasted the following decades on making sure everyone associated musical theater with tepid kitschy pop songs

I really enjoyed it, and saw it a few times in theaters, but it wasn't a knock out of the park in my opinion. They removed/altered some significant parts of the plot which neutered the characters and the message of the story.

One of the running themes of the show is to make certain that what you wish is what you want, and that you get your wish in the right way. Along the way they get their wishes, sometimes at the expense of others, and after they get their wish some of them do bad things--namely Red, who kills wolves, and Jack, who steals and murders.

By altering the characters and timeline, they made it so that the weight/impact of the characters getting their wishes, and what they did before/during/after the wishes, just isn't there. So instead of the Baker and the wife both being absolutely exhausted by the baby and being unhappy yet again, you just see the Baker being afraid to be a father. And so on for the other characters.

On that note: neutering Little Red and removing much of the Giantess' dialogue. Little Red and her grandmother go on wolf killing sprees, so she's eager for violence--until it involves someone she knows. And when the witch points out that she has killed countless wolves so how can she be so squeamish now, Red says 'it's not the same' and then we get that wonderful line: "Ask the wolf's mother."

They also cut the dialogue where the Giantess flat out says why she wants revenge on Jack: she treated him right but he stole from them repeatedly then murdered her husband. Jack is not an innocent. So the element of the Giantess being just as human as the rest of them is lost.

Also, they were so wrong for excluding "No More." The part where Corden's Baker just breaks down and they swell that musical is still really emotional but I think Corden could have done amazing with the actual song.

So uh, which /Spring Awakening/ here?

>>67298957
Was surprisingly and thankfully very fucking good, could have been better but I was expecting an absolute fucking disaster. Streep killed it as expected.

Michael Cerveris kills it in that bit

He's the best Sweeney Todd imo, and Patti LuPone the best Mrs Lovett I dont like Angela Lansbury's voice

It's a rap musical about the American Revolution.

That being said, yes, it's actually really well done. Made me care about two characters in history I wouldn't have given a shit about otherwise, those being Hamilton himself and Aaron Burr,Sir

Marquis de Lafayette's pretty cool too
>>
>>67299635
what do you mean which Spring Awakening? anyway I love that show. I used to REALLY want a movie but I've changed my mind and don't think it would translate well to the screen. it works really good as a musical especially with the microphones being hidden in their clothes. nice charm.

What are some shows you love even though you know they're not great?

I love most of what Wildhorn puts out. I even liked that weird revival of Jekyll & Hyde with Constantine Maroulis and Deborah Cox. Constantine Maroulis was even a great actor during some scenes.

False, actually, musicals started out as "plays with songs" and didn't begin incorporating operatic elements until much later.

I'll never understand why I took American History in college for a semester but damn if it didn't expand my mind. Not because it was American, but the man could teach history and show something beyond history: connection.

Sorry for the rant: but those two definitely deserve a movie or a musical.

The comedian Stewart Lee wrote and directed Jerry Springer the Opera. whenever he's mentioned on /tv/ someone usually posts "he came out stew" in reference to one of his bits.

I get that we're shit posting, but opera is hype as fuck. You haven't lived until you've been able to show off your vocal virtuosity in front of a crowd. Once you've trained for ten years, you can sing over any orchestra and just blow people away with the supple tone of your voice.

I love both art forms, but there's a certain transience to MT. The purity of the music and the dedication it takes to perform an opera really pushes it over into a new realm.
>>
>>67300232
Oh, you're gonna fucking love this musical then.

Specially considering 99% of music is consumed in recorded form nowadays

I meant who, fuck autocorrect. It was the musical that made me love musicals. I saw it on tour and the set and abstraction blew me away. Sadly, I also think that's why it wouldn't translate to film; it would lose its strengths, and that comes from someone who was gung-ho about a movie and being Moritz in that movie. Ah, high school.

I always loved how they fed the mics down through their hair and whatever, absolutely brilliant.

>>67299799
Absolutely worth your time, terribly underrated musical, maybe my favorite Sondheim. Definitely listen.

>>67299671
Awesome. Something local? Or the NY deaf production? Almost saw that when I was up there, but I went and saw Drunk Shakespeare and Something Rotten instead.

Speaking of which, Something Rotten was pretty great, if normal fare. Pretty smart, excellently executed. I want the lead to go do Evil Dead the Musical; he's Bruce Campbell on Broadway.

On How I Saved Roosevelt.

I'm really liking this. Complex as fuck and I don't think I can really catch onto it like I did Hamilton but I'm enjoying the hell out of these songs.

Well, the guy that tried to kill Roosevelt just got the Chair. This is neat stuff.
>>
>>67300457

Because there's a different style to it. I'm not saying that the singers in a theater production aren't talented, but there's a different approach to the music.

The loudness isn't the point, it's one small part of a classically trained singer's technique. They can resonate at any dynamic, where you're stuck with a mic system for MT in spaces that don't allow sound to carry like music halls or opera houses.

And the difference between recorded and live music plays a large part in how this is consumed. Sure, you can listen to an album of a popular show, but it doesn't carry the same sort of weight as a live performance. Having that in between of the speaker system rather than the pure voice also puts distance between the singer and the audience. The singer's voice, without a mic, physically touches the theater goers and adds a whole different dimension to the experience. It's phenomenal. That's why it's so special to me and my bias as a classically trained singer who still dabbles in MT rep because it's all good shit.
>>
>>67300622
Sadly no, the only thing I got out of that was the anger of the way it ended when it should have ended fucking five minutes earlier

Hamilton is unusually absorbing, it seems to have a similar kind of narrative appeal as something like Les Mis. Most Sondheim holds you a bit more at arms length, Assassins probably doubly so because of the revue structure.

Plus, you know, the awesome score. Wicked is in this weird place where it's both overrated by plebs and underrated by people who are sick of it. It wasn't some huge step forward for musical theater or particularly innovative, but it's still one of the most entertaining shows out there.
>>
>>67302541
The show can be really good with the right cast (like julia murney, wiljemin verkaik, for elphaba anyway) or mediocre and theme park-y with the wrong
>>
>>67302359
Never seen it. I liked a ton of the songs though.
>>
>>67302541
Eh. I really didn't care for the score, it felt to me like the most generic kind of broadway pop and with only a couple of good songs. I don't want to hate on people for enjoying it, I can see the appeal especially when you factor in just how energizing and fun live musical theater can be, but it just felt to me like that's ALL it had going for it. That and its good natured amiability.
>>
>>67302511
I snorted. Christianfags are literally idiotic then. I never saw JCS but even I knew Judas was a redeemable sinner, as was Peter and Jesus was flawed (his whore wife?)

But I'm not him... JCS can be loved by non-Christfags. Let's be honest: any media involved with religion can be good if it has other aspects. A lot of eastern mythology shit is good. Confuciusiam has good points.
