I don't know anon, sometimes the acting feels perfect for the setting other times it feels out of place.
Maybe the reason behind the weird tone is the large cast. I think a smaller cast in the same setting can make the difference.

I've read the interpretation that it's a play on the monster/mass terror movies by having the opening affect the most people and by the end it's only affecting one or two people before fading away.
