can someone recommend me a movie that fits the same niche as:
matrix, 2001, Alien, ghost in the shell, blade runner and ex machina.
I'm sure there is a trend to be recognized. I can't quite pinpoint it but obviously sci fi that doesn't rely on action.

How about movies that are based on novels by Phillip K. Dick as Blade Runner was?
* Total Recall (the one with Arnold). Great movie
* Minority Report. Good movie. Would have been better with a good actor in place of Tom Cruise and with a better director than modern-day Spielberg
* Paycheck. Interesting idea but Ben Affleck is rather horrible, as usual
* A Scanner Darkly. I didn't like this film and Keanu Reeves is rather horrible, as usual.

I say avoid Dark City if you liked those movies. Dark City is like an introduction for the brain dead and I felt insulted when I watched it. There aren't a lot of movies I delete after watching but I deleted this one.

i can see what you're saying. i think snowpiercer is similar in a way where it's a little heavy handed and obvious and more an exhibition of how to use filmmaking as a vehicle for ideas, despite the ideas leaving a bit to be desired.

not everyone's cup of tea. it's really weird and a lot of the effects are pretty crappy, but to me it's strangely beautiful and hypnotizing. also it has egyptian gods and shit. it comes across like it's ripping off stuff like fifth element and stargate left and right, but if anything the opposite is true because the comics this is based on are older than any of those. underrated gem in my book.
