The short version: Time travel
tl;dr - Summarized. Two men discover a time machine and see their future selves working. Assuming a cyclical version of time travel, they do not interact with their time travelling future selves, and travel back into the past, as their duplicates did. Things go awry when they decide to try to change the past.
Long story - Continuing from summarized: one of them decides to try and change the past to get more money than the other. This leads to some complications. To make things more complex, they start trying to prevent their earlier selves from conducting the time travel, once they realise they can actually affect the time travel.

It's a realistic approach to what could happen if two hapless characters discovered time travel. The movie is the relationship of the two leads being torn apart. The incomprehensible timelines are intentional because that's what they would be experiencing. It's not meant to be figured out.
