It all started with Harry Potter, right? I say it's about time.

Decades ago, when Italy still had a movie industry, we would have gotten dozens of crazy Italian clones of the genre by now instead of these sterile Hollywood made-by-committee bullshit.

I wouldn't say so, I'd say it really began with Twilight. Harry Potter were kids' films the audience grew up with, and also, their releases were mostly paced reasonably.
>>
>>67272507

Harry Potter advanced in age over time along with the reader, so from preteen to teens

YA has been circling the drain for a few years now and looks ready to me pushed aside.

I didn't hate the three OP movies, I've seen much worse, but they all just hit the same beats over and over so if you've seen one you've seen them all. At least Divergent implied that the characters fucked and weren't sexless Barbie dolls.

I did somewhat enjoy the first one even if it had some problems.

Standard YA Formula:

>Teen lead
>In society run by oppressive regime of evil government
>Teen eventually joins rebellion
>Overthrows evil authority

I can't believe how un-self-aware people are about this. It's obviously all meant to appeal to the stereotypical teen "Grown-ups don't understand me, they're just bad, freedumb 5ever". Do people watch it just to be ironic or something?

I feel like writing a series about a group of upstanding youths protecting their good and just society from bands of violent rebels, overcoming their adversaries' wild, self-centered ways with discipline and honor.

The last Hunger Games didn't have a great return either.

The era of Blockbuster YA adaptations was ushered in by Harry Potter. The strength of the book's fanbase was such that the movies enjoyed great success despite their meh-ness. First Hunger Games had prime Jennifer Lawrence and standout performances from Stanley Tucci, Wes Bentey and Donald Sutherland. Everything else was a pretty bland cashgrab, and people are finally cluing in to this simple fact now that Harry Potter is a distant memory. One can only hope that this is, indeed, the end of big-budget YA shitfests.
>>
>>67275808
>Goku and Vegeta are legit hateful rivals that become buds

Isn't that basically what happened in Naruto, just faster and on a smaller scale? They hated each other at the beginning, but they were bffs by the timeskip (albeit bffs who shove their arms through each other's lungs)

None of these people read Animal Farm.

If you let a group of petulant teens have a revolution, there would be a Napoleon among them to sieze power.
>>
>>67275774

After I saw Maze Runner I was so disappointed for the explanation about why they were in the maze that I started planning my own story about people trapped in an isolated environment with more intriguing reasons that... what was it? "We need to figure out how to cure the zombie plague?"
>>
>>67275866

Napoleon didn't seize power until more than a decade after the revolution started, though. Still, it would be really cool to see one of these YA series run with the idea in a sequel or something.

>Harry Potter book 8, 15 years later
>The Order of the Phoenix was given "emergency" powers to restore order, since the ministry was destroyed/infiltrated
>Harry naturally rises to the top
>Starts arresting and imprisoning Death Eaters, then secret Death Eaters, then sympathizers, then collaborators, then anyone who pisses him off
>Hermione runs a massive orwellian spy network mixing magic and technology
>Ron is head of the Secret Police
>Protagonist is Draco Malfoy's kid, who joins a revolution led by Neville Longbottom

>>
>>67276372
I fell for the HG meme, it's a pretty solid movie. But then it got really retarded real fast. I'd wager it's in no small part of Jennifer Lawrence's indispensability + her bitchy attitude.
>>
>>67276453
Her attitude is what ruined her because she was un-fucking real in Winter's Bone. Well, she had a great supporting cast but she fucking carried that film. I think X-men was the breaking point for her.
>>
>>67272507
>>67272538
Harry Potter, Twilight and Hunger Games all became popular on their own. The only thing that they've really got in common is that they made normies read and their autistic fanbases obsessed with shipfaggotry.

Ultimately all the ripoffs came from studios going "X is popular, let's find an IP similar to it and ride it's coattails to get easy shekels", which is extremely normal, see all the capeshit nowadays and all the swordshit in the mid 2000s.

After Harry Potter came out we got a shitload of long running fantasy book series filled with magic creatures getting movie adaptations, after Twilight came a bunch of love stories about vampires like True Blood and Vampire Diaries and after Hunger Games came the dystopian futures ruled by opressive dictators and rag tag group of teenagers that have to overthrow them.
>>

You forgot to talk about hermione being the head of the elf liberation front movement.
>>
I don't see it dying anytime soon.
Its all about demographics, there will always be a new batch of teens so there will always be movies directed towards teens.

It will feature people closer to their age group, that talks about how unfair and oppressive society is, a "chosen" teen to turn things around and cool effects. Everything teens love.

Harry Potter also showed that people love when they can grow up with the stars they have watched, so I can see a series like Harry Potter coming on the horizon soon they just need to find something popular enough.
>>
>>67276525
Yep Winter's Bone was really good. She started feeling good about herself, people were telling her she took shits that smelled fabulous, then the Fappening is what really flipped her shit.

That's very hard to happen, very few of the intended movie franchise ever get to finish their run. And even Twilight and Hunger Games were losing their popularity by the time they released their final movies and they didn't even come close to 8 movies.

The problem with these YA books is that the plots are fuck-tarded, and that becomes more obvious onscreen than it is on the page.

Divergent: People are separated by personality for some unknown reason, then they fight.

Hunger Games: Lets put traps in the city, except lets make the traps not actually KILL the invaders, but give them a chance. Like lets make the oil fill the room slowly so the invaders can get away!

Maze Runner: Lets make kids live in a maze that tries to kill them. Nobody knows why this is a good idea.

It used to be that teenage girls' identification figures were pretty - I mean, they were usually stars, you know? But increasingly, teens are self-aware at a younger age about both their looks and the media they watch. Stars like this potater provide a identification figure that doesn't depress them with their own limitations, or make them feel like maybe they should grow out of this shit. It's a pity. At one time, as soon as you realised you were being given unrealistic expectations by the shit you watched, you moved on. Now the lies are more calculating but no less pure horseshit for that.

Everyone involved in LOTR were now industry experts and weren't going to do the Hobbit unless they got paid triple, not to mention New Zealand charging more in taxes. The studio was never going to pay for a single Hobbit movie.

With extra stuff like Gandalf's quest, Thorin's backstory, making Bard more of a character, the fall of Erebor and not cutting the Battle of Five Armies after Bilbo gets knocked out there was actually enough material for two movies. Problem is that in the end the studio and Hackson realized they could make even more money by adding another movie.

And that's really what kills it for me: Goku and Vegeta have an arc of enemies>allies for now>rivals>friends>enemies>friends. Vegeta actually backslides into villainy just to feed his old grudge, that's great storytelling.
Meanwhile, I never got the impression that Naruto and Sasuke ever liked each other. Their arc is hated fellow students > hated fellow soldiers but grudging allies > enemies (this is where the bulk of the story sits) >friends. They were always arguing (and not in a friendly ball-busting shittalking way that guys do, just anger), Sasuke never found out about Naruto getting mad and going fox mode after his "death", and unlike literally every other team, they never spend time together outside missions. We see InoShikaCho, and Kiba's team just hanging out walking around together all the time. Lee's team always trained together. But as soon as Team Kakashi comes from a mission (we see it three times, the cat mission, Land of Waves and another one done offscreen) everyone goes their separate ways. They have no camaraderie, no actual bond. Sure, Land of Waves was a serious shitshow, but Sakura never even got hit once, and apart from that one cool trick against Zabuza, no one ever actually tried to work together. The fight on the bridge should have been Zabuza v Kakashi, and Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura v Haku. But no, it ends up being a solo fight even when Naruto is involved.
They aren't teammates, they aren't comrades, and they certainly aren't friends.

The second one was amazing. Aidan Gillen really fixed it up.

Non-meme answer: The first movie was one of those movies where you just want to know the answer to the mystery no matter how fucking retarded it is.

Shounen action. But yes, it's formulaic.
For the same reason too: It sells.

I stick with those that are unique... Negima, Lucifer and Biscuit Hammer, etc

HXH and Negima both deserve proper endings. Best shounen ever.

>>

The problem is all these franchises are stretched too long. That's why the last installments do so poorly.
>>
>>67283260
Yep. This is true.

>Twilight
>Hunger Games
>Divergent
>The Giver
>The 4th Wave
>Percy Jackson (probably. I don't know enough to say for certain)
>Maze Runner
>Eragon
They are all legit the same

As others have mentioned: Hunger Games, Harry Potter, and maybe even Twilight are the exceptions as they started it... but... I think Twilight is a stretch as it came from Rowling and Rice's limelight in a sense.

I'm more liberal with Chronicles of Narnia and The Golden Compass (the books)... They are different enough.

I watched the first one with a sibling. It wasn't that bad, although like all YA movies it made me question a lot of things.

Second one was surprisingly darker than the first one. Honestly, I watched it for CIA. The Korean guy is actually cool too and gets things done.

i love movies like this. they have an "existential" vibe to them, thats what i liked about the maze runner.. the location/concept was just so out there and spooky.. i like movies with an "otherworldy" maze that traps the humans in a sick game, its a big metaphor for life i guess..

check out shit like Cube, The Exam, resident evil/escape plan (kind of, with the location), some japanese anime is a bit like this such as Kaiji, attack on titan reminded me of maze runner a bit.. even the Saw franchise or Cabin in the Woods to an extent..

YA flicks are for YA's.

Back in my day, when we weren't building walls to protect the village against predators and roving savages, we enjoyed Goonies, Weird Science and BTTF.

I get the urge to laugh at people who are now in their 20's who speak fondly of Harry Potter, but then I remember that I was once in their shoes.

Nostalgia is a cruel bitch.

Negima is harem for 25% and then it becomes shounen but with loads of parody. Only the end does it become DBZ.

Lucifer + Biscuit Hammer; Main character is a bad guy till almost the end. Once again, it's the end that became cliched shounen crap (he can beat EVERYONE NOW?!)

But both began great and I still think Negima was perfect all through
