I feel like this might eventually lead to a problem. With Shane handling all the outside violence, the zombies, other survivors like Terminus, the Wolves, etc., might he not split off and form his own group? Wasn't that how the Saviors got started? They were basically the zombie killsquad for Hilltop and became a second society within the first, and then split from there?
That is definitely a lot of interesting stuff, show would have been a lot better with Rick and Shane broing it up and working out their differences and ultimately coming together to kick ass and take names. I also like the implied transformation of the prison into a castle

Plus he was in love with Beth and honestly except for Carol and Rick I think he's had the most of a journey. I don't know whypeople hate on his character development so much, it seems pretty clear to me. Who grooms half of these characters? I mean Rick looks like shit and gets a beard now and then, but Carol has kept a tidy, short hair cut, Glenn looks suave as always, the males are mostly clean shaven.

That's because most of his character development is internal.
Here, I will explain this as best I can. You guys will mock me for it but fuck it I might as well make the case for him.
He starts out as a younger brother in the shadow of his older brother, he's very lost and without a place and he's all immature and shit. I think his first big character development thing is when Merle tells him to grow a pair of balls and keep going when he's searching for Sophia, but that wasn't really development so much as exposition. His things with Beth and Sophia are him trying to protect innocence or some shit. I desperately wanted him to throw 20th century social mores out the window and fuck her but that never happened sadly because AMC are cucks.
Fuck I am bad at explaining this but there has been some amount of change in Daryl, it is very hard to tell though because he barely says anything. That's part of why I like him because he is the static figure to some degree. Every show needs that, or book, or movie; one character who stays somewhat the same as a sort of contrast to everyone else changing.

I find him interesting because he was a good person but guarded, reclusive, and being held back by his only company being his trashy brother. He never really belonged in society, but only after societal collapse did he finally became a useful and respected person with a new "family" that appreciates him. They touched on this a little with the Joe (the Claimer) telling him "ain't nothing sadder than an outdoor cat thinks he's an indoor cat" and later Daryl's troubles adjusting to Alexandria but finding commonality with Aaron. Now the world is becoming more unforgiving and his "new family" is arguably becoming more ruthless than Merle was, and he's starting to have to be the kind of person he didn't want to be anymore. He tried to be the kind of person he wanted to be by recruiting Dwight, and it bit him in the ass. Because of that you could see how apprehensive he was about trusting Jesus (he literally just wanted to put his unconscious body in a tree and leave him there), and it just fucks with his head even more that so far trusting Jesus has been the right call.
He's a pretty tragic character, but sadly underutilized by the writers.
