I like this serial. I unironically think the Dulcians are some of the most interesting aliens in classic Who. There's so much conveyed about their culture and way of looking at things, like when the Doctor and co. ask one about the history of the island and she gives a response that's obviously word for word quoting from a textbook. It's subtle but it says volumes about how they view education and by extension their entire culture. I also love this scene.
TEEL: Well, it doesn't seem logical somehow, sir. We all know that there's been a steady uniform decrease in radiation during the past hundred and seventy two years, and suddenly it all disappears.
BALAN: Well it has happened, therefore it is a fact. We now know that the effects of an atomic explosion lasts for a hundred and seventy two years.
TEEL: But why, sir?
BALAN: Oh, I dare say our atomic experts could provide a reason, but it seems pointless to spend time searching for reasons to prove facts. A fact is a truth.
It's completely the opposite of how most humans would react. The Dulcians aren't just pacifists, they have a weird sort of passivity towards everything. You could even argue that the Dulcians and Dominators represent the more aggressive and passive sides of human nature. Also, the interpretation that the Dulcians are hippies and therefore this serials is just "lol fuck youth culture" kind of falls apart because the ones determined not to fight are clearly establishment figures who ignore the younger, rebellious Dulcian who has a much more Doctor-ish mindset about things. It's about a system run by old people that's become too complacent to deal with anything effectively.
Unfortunately the serial kind of stops focusing on that stuff in the last few episodes, but I still enjoy the bickering between the two Dominators, one purely pragmatic and one bloodthirsty. And it could just be because it's not a reconstruction, but it seems to move along at a better pace than most of '60s Who.

Nah. Read the Doctor Who mag special for Day and Time of the Doctor. They include all the changes to the script from draft stage to shooting scripts to final editing. Matt was talking about different takes of his acting where he was more in visibly in pain, not different endings. There were also things like his Doctor losing a leg cut from the final edit, and a whole sequence of the Doctor hallucinating a lot more people than just Amy, like Craig and Sophie and their baby, Vastra and her gang, River, Rory etc. But there was never a time when Capaldi was the one walking up the stairs and those aren't his feet, they're Matt's.
