Is this the most over-rated movie ever made?

People talk about it like it's this fucking masterpiece. Why?
>>

The first time I watched it I was bored out of my mind and turned it off halfway through.

Sometime later I tried again and absolutely loved it.

It's typical 70's New Hollywood, but its downer ending resonates strongly with those who suffer mild to severe depression, and who are looking to have their cynicism validated.

I agree with you. It's pretty overrated, much like most of New Hollywood, but you're going to find few people who agree with you.

Yeah I get the feeling that people tend to overrate it a tad too much. It's a great film, but people make it out to be a flawless masterpiece that changed cinema forever.

Overall Chinatown is pretty derivate of the classic noir films of the 40s and 50s. Though it is very well made and executed it is formulaic, and offers nothing that anyone hasn't seen before.
