They're almost all mediocre. Even for a person who likes horror most have enough value to be worth watching but not enough to be considered great. Look at any of the major franchises. Every Friday the 13th movie is middle of the road but they're kind of fun to watch so they work,

i don't hate them. i think some of the things he did were fucking great. the shining has its moments, cinematography wise, so does 2001 (and that has a good story put behind it as well), his best work.
but saying anything he did was 10/10 is very farfetched, especially when his style is so outdated now, and wasn't even praised by critics back then.

it's not bait. his style IS outdated, especially his really long shots with all the flaws, all the little imperfections that are only cast out because the shot is so fucking long and slow. the perfectionist thing is a meme, he certainly wasn't afraid of cutting corners. like in 2001 when the flight hostess walks up the wall, for example. like i said, some of it is really well shot, some of it is NOT. also, the shining helicopter comes to mind.

i wasn't criticizing it for that. it was ahead of its time back then, and fascinating to watch today still, but if it was made today, let's not get carried away, it wouldn't be anything special because we've seen the continuation of it already. Star Wars with the ship models and the space background and all of the other revolutionary practical effects. Narrative wise, 2001 is still pretty unique and well made. It would be a good story in a film that's way too long.
