Kevin Smith confuses the fuck out of me because he seems like maybe he has the capacity to make competent and interesting films, but instead spends his time and money making really terrible movies, and ranting about comicbook crap. Even if he continually made dumb comedies like Zack and Miri Make A Porno, he would still be putting bigger hacks like Seth Rogan to Shame.

At the moment he's making small films for no one but himself, not giving much fuck about how they are received, so pretty much the opposite of hack.
The hackiest he ever got was Jersey Girl and Cop Out, and Cop Out's awfulness was in huge part not his fault.
He does tend to suck dick and overhype capeshit though, but you can blame that in part on middle age and weed.

I'm a livelong comic fan as well, but I'm not afraid to be critical at times. I like Kev, but he tends to oversell shit and be exited about shit by default, in part because he's lost his edge growing into a comfortable middle aged lifestyle, in part because chainsmoking weed makes everything awesome.
I tend to appreciate his positive attitude, it's something to be aspired to really, but sometimes he can drone on and on and on while sucking somethings dick, or burst into tears over something as inane as a video game commercial.
