Just finished ZULU, I wanted to watch it after I became a Lawrence of Arabia fan, though this movie is totally different. I ended up liking it a lot more than I'd like to admit, anyway I just wonder what you guys think I might like knowing I loved ZULU and Lawrence
>>
>>67109273
Do you want some genrall british film recs or more like zulu and lawrence?
>>
>>67109303
Oh yeah they don't need to be English, they don't even need to be IN English, I love the style of the films AND their material, so I don't know, you're call, whatever you think I'd like, so both column a and column b I guess is my answer
>>
both good film about "the powers that be "taking over a native peoples.
>>
I thought 55 Days at Peking was a good movie albeit it's American and not British
>>
>>67109368
That's only kiiiinda what Lawrence is about, it's mostly about getting inside Lawerence's psychology and of course ZULU isn't about conquer either, its more like Jaws, but yes thats the context. It's kind of a cringey movie when hordes of black people are running in and getting gutted like fish over and over by a few good ol whites, it makes no goddamn sense, but it's still a fucking great movie, I can't lie
>>
>>67109382
Like I said, it doesn't need to be British, thank you I'll mark it down
>>
>>67109329
Well i would highly recommend Get Carter(1971) its britsh crime film ,so not really a epic like Law and Zulu.It does however star Michael Caine in one of his best starring roles, and is praised for its unquie cinematography and on location filming. Also has a cool soundtrack.

As for epic and old , i'd go for Spartacus , The good the bad and the ugly and Ben hur for starters if you havent seen any of them

Hope this helps
>>
>>67109446
That movie has more romance and shit to it though but there's still action
>>
Did the Zulu ever win any battles? I imagine not.
>>
>>67109422

but thats exactly what happened irl

The great shame of the brits

>>
>>67109465
They slaughterd 1000s of brits in a battle just before the events of zulu
>>
>>67109463
Alright, thanks. Tbh I hate to be typical but romance is generally the element that bores me in film, sometimes it's done well and I love it but the romance in Ben Hur, I ended up just fast fowarding , but even then I wasn't a big fan of that one, maybe cause when I saw it last week I was spoiled on Lawerence which is just fucking MY kind of movie

I'm also a huge fan of Patton
>>
>>67109465
Fuck yes they did
>>
>>67109455
Thank you sir

I cant like Zulu, because its too melodramatic.
The singing scene is completely made up, from both sides, and its not something that could have ever possibly occurred considering the culture on both sides.

Also I dislike how the movie beats you over the face with its class message, and the anti-war message.
I normally love these, and support them, but they should be more subtle.

Still good movie, but if you want historical stuff you should see Waterloo (1970). Bit more subtle and more grounded in reality, I think its my favorite historical film.
>>
I'm gonna get The Alamo also.
>>
>>67109698
Yeah, that's kinda what I like. It's not based one hundred percent in reality, but it's good fun, the anxiety of the approaching Zulu and the way you really feel theyre awesome power. When the Zulu sing to honor the British, it's not a moment that would have happened in ral life but in the film it's just great. It's like a Pulp war movie
And thank you, I'll get Waterloo

>>67109698
Not OP but the singing scene is my favorite in the film.Almost brung me to tears the first time i saw it

Hey speaking of Waterloo, didn't Kubrick write a Napoleon movie? Damn I fucking wish he had made that film

Although, I liked Zulu I turned off Zulu Dawn mid way through.

You might like Gallipoli, also the Ghost and the Darkness comes to mind because of the whole Africa thing.

Not quite. Only John Chard is an engineer, Bromhead is an infantry officer. Bromhead tells Chard it's his first action at the start, at the end Chard tells Bromhead it's his too. Bromhead (and the audience) don't know until that point.

Could you elaborate on the culture part? Why would it have been impossible for the singing contest to take place? Curious
>>
Watching Waterloo now.
>>
Orson Wells as Napoleon holy shit what
>>
>>67111381
Because neither side sees war like that, and neither side saw the other as equals.
>>
>>67109855
The Napoleon script is easy to find online, but its pretty bad to be honest. Almost the entire plot happens through voiceover and no one has any personality besides Napoleon. Few characters even have more than a couple scenes. I don't know how far into development it got but it definitely reads like a first draft.
