I believe that he was the native part of Fantasia, just like the Swamps of Sadness, or deadly Sphinx guardians - he was deadly, evil, abd dangerous, like the dark corners of a land made out of dreams should be. Why he was hunting Atreyu? Just because who he was, because the incoming Nothing was also his end and in the last moments of his existence he wanted to fullfill his destiny, to do what he was created for, to rip, tear and devour, to scare and hunt. He stayed true to himself to the very end and as such deserves more recognition that apathetic mountain turtle from the swamps.
Lets hope that in the reborn Fantasia there was some dark lair where he dwells dreaming of blood and murder, this land needs monsters just as a good dish needs some sour spices or a pinch of salt.
