In filmmaking, is it more deliberate manipulation of the set/lighting to create the desired perfect shot or is it just a visionary's spontaneous composition?
To clarify, for example, do directors KNOW beforehand that they what to manipulate a shadow a certain way to express a certain theme, or do they simply stumble onto it and go with it?
Some directors storyboard the whole thing like Ridley Scott
Other directors build the scene based on an inkling of what the image is supposed to be, tweaking it until they get the set and lighting right, then shooting it. Like prime Francis Ford Coppola.

the only reason I ask is because it seems pretentious to actively manipulate a scene to convey a certain theme/symbol. If it doesn't come naturally, then what's the point?
The former, obviously, not the latter!
(Little happy mistakes are always welcome, though.)

also, that's really not what I'm talking about.
I'm referring to the manipulation of lighting and cinematography and the like to invoke certain images
It would be a lot easier to understand what I mean if I just reference the video that made me question it all.

What you want is some nice Dogme 95. Which, funnily enough, is the most fucking pretentious thing ever.

My favorite director, James Orin Incandenza, deliberately planned every flash of light, every shadow in pain staking detail. He was a master of light filmatography and it showed.

So if you want to convey a theme in your movie you should just hope you luck out while filming? What the fuck are you talking about dude

Some do the Innaritu thing and plan on the photographer's so-called "golden hour" like he did in his last film.

But Revenant wasn't shot during the magic hour except for a few scenes.
What does this shadow represent, /tv/?
