It's all style no substance (as Tarantino always is) without much style. Too much fat on the whole thing, the characters were fake feeling and not endearing, and the film perpetuates "acceptable racism" by outright advocating the extermination of whites.

Last 20 minutes were complete garbage. Candy and Schultz die. There's a big tense shootout with the right hand man and Django. Then his wife gets captured and the scene is over and all the tension is instantly dissipated. Cut to Django being shipped off to some mine instead of being shot or hung right then and there. Queue quirky OI M8 SHRIMP ON THE BAHBIE Australian guy and the most gratuitous Tarantino cameo yet complete with forced humor and him mugging the camera. It almost feels like he stopped the action at the climax of the movie just so he could squeeze his oh so special cameo in there. Anyway Django escapes, goes back to the plantation and kills everyone with absolutely no buildup or excitement. That's the end. Tarantino ripped off so many other great Western directors and yet he still couldn't do a decent ending. Should have studied more Leone and learned how to properly execute a climax.

I think it is one of Tarantino's weaker movies. Everything after the big shoot-out in candyland is incredibly boring. Leo had a good role as a villain but Jamie Foxx isn't a good lead imo

I mean it's his film, but it sort of clashes so terribly with everything else it completely ruined my immersion. Film was too bloated as was.

Franco Nero Django is a former Union Army soldier who has a bad-ass machine gun he carries in a bad-ass coffin, it's like a metaphor and shit. He also shoots people regardless of their political affiliation or nationality in the pursuit of gold because he's a greedy bastard.
Jamie Foxx "Django" is a slave who, before the civil war, earns his freedom being a bounty hunter, and then breaks his wife out of a plantation, willing to sacrifice his money to do so. There is no bad-ass machine gun or bad-ass coffin.
In short, they have nothing in common.
