I feel like Kobayashi and Ozu have made films that rival Kurosawa's works. Hara Kiri and Tokyo Story are films that I wouldn't consider to be lesser than Seven Samurai or Ikiru.
So why is Kurosawa the titan of Japanese cinema while other directors whom I perceive to be equally great have served supplementary roles? I'm genuinely curious for the reason, not challenging the long-standing consensus.
Nobody gives a fuck

Kurosawa is the John Ford/Stephen Spielberg of Japan. He's as talented as Ford and more than Spielberg and his movies are also often more political as well. Neither Spielberg or Ford ever made something on the scale of Ran.
He's insanely talented and deserves every bit of credit he gets.

Kobayashi made the greatest japanese film of all time, but kurosawa has made more great films.

they hadn't invented anime yet in the 50's so it couldn't turn japan's culture into backed-up shit house catastrophe and based film makers like this were allowed to thrive instead of drawing panty shots and retarded monsters all day

I have no evidence to support this, but probably because Toho was better at distributing in the 50s.

Beautiful
Made more accessible movies but also more good movies than the other two.
Because Kurosawa is the most Western director from Japan.
