If you change enough shit from the book, you 100% own the copyright to it. It's basically a form of stealing.
By changing/adding powers to Superman is how DC was able to steal ownership from the brothers who created him.
By changing up a fuckload of lines in the story that's how Harmony Gold stole Macross and various US distributors stole ownership rights over various animes.
US copyright laws, as written by the US movie and TV studios themselves, are designed to steal ownership from others by means of changing shit once a license to use shit is aquired on the grounds that they own their own "unique likeness" of it.

All Harmony Gold aquired was a distribution license for Macross where they then took it upon themselves to re-name it to Robotech, change up almost every sentence spoken, and copyright it as their own to where it's illegal and violates HG's copyrights to import Macross stuff to the US.
And with the Burton movie it means the book publisher still owns the original book rights, but that's it. Everything else is owned by the studio that made this movie including future book rights.
