Wrong, competition drives progress. War is the extremes of competition, and can easily reverse progress just as much as progressing it.
In fact this film shows this concept quite well. Agu and his family were doing well, living relatively normal lives, ever ones you would see in the West. It's only until this conflict came that we see a normal boy reduced to the cliche we're used to seeing on the countless UNICEF charity adverts on our TVs. The tragdegy of this movie is seeing normal people being forced to live under the stereotypes that cause them so much pain and suffering.
I think a powerful moment was when the Commandant forces Agu to kill the Engineer, the man even says he's a post-grad sent to inspect the bridges. Yet, he's forced to be seen as the soldier that ruined both his and Agu's life.
Very tragic war movie.
