Because it was heralded as a groundbreaking movie and everyone fawned over it for weeks after it came out. We were told huge comeback for Keaton, great soundtrack, innovative direction.
Then I found out it was pretentious crap. Michael Keaton was BATMAN and then his career failed. His character was BIRDMAN who had a failing career. Wow - so layered. Give me a few days here and I'll see if I can figure out the symbolism there.
Another annoying thing to me was the "big surprise" that Hollywood loved a movie about itself and gave it a bunch of awards.
