BETTER-CALL-SAUL_612x380_2.jpg
58 KB, 612x380
Why do TV shows follow this myth that only bad guys call their lawyers? If a good guy is arrested or if a bad guy wants people to know he has "nothing to hide", they won't call their lawyers. Only bad guys that want to cover stuff up "lawyer up", and they're treated like scumbags for doing so (and so are their lawyers). In real life, if you get arrested, you should ALWAYS get a lawyer, doesn't matter if you're innocent, because the cops are convinced you aren't and will try to screw you.
>>
If you have nothing to hide why would you need a lawyer?
>>
this myth does not exist. Weak as fuck bait.
>>
>>67006686
Because if an innocent guy dont talk to the police and call his lawyer there is no story because there is nothing they can do against him

>>67006967
Everyone have something to hide
>>
>>67006686
>Why do TV shows follow this myth that only bad guys call their lawyers?

Because it'd make for boring TV
>>
>>67006967
Because it's easy to incriminate yourself even if you're innocent, when its your word against the cops everything you say can accidentally fuck you over.
>>
>>67007010
The myth does exist, as exemplified by >>67006967
Countless shows use this cliché, from Law and Order, Criminal Minds, NYPD Blue, Bones, Castle...
>>
>>67006686
because normies think the only people who go to court are killers and drug dealers.
>>
>>67007096
well probably 90% of the people who go through the criminal courts are repeat offenders doing something drug related (including stealing to buy drugs)
>>
Anyone innocent who doesn't phone a lawyer anyway is fucking retarded.
>>
>>67006686
>>67007096
They also have this weird idea that criminals are constantly "getting off on a technicality", even though real-world conviction and incarceration rates say otherwise. The balance of justice is strongly in favor of the Prosecution (unless you happen to be very rich, which 99% of criminals aren't)
>>
AM I BEING DETAINED
>>
>>67007033
>>67007048
Fine, then just don't have the good guys call their lawyers, artistic license or whatever.
But they shouldn't then treat people like scumbags if they demand their right to an attorney, don't make it an automatic sign of guilt.

Fuck Yeah America.jpg
35 KB, 650x488
The producers of these programs are trying very, very hard to convince you that America is not a degenerate, third-world shithole where innocent people can be, and often are, convicted of crimes they did not commit.

"Who needs a lawyer? You're the good guy. We'll represent you fairly."

Fucking America.
>>
>phoning a lawyer
What is this meme?
How am I supposed to know some lawyers number?
The only one I know only does advertisements for car accidents on tv
>>
I think a worse one is the whole "We'll arrest you for obstruction of justice/interfering with a police investigation if you don't cooperate!"
>>
>>67008243
Call your dad, he'll handle the grown up stuff.
>>
>>67008448
thanks for the input officer
>>
>>67008343
Police do in fact say that in real life, but they're bluffing, yet another reason why you need to call your lawyer.
>>
>>67008373
lol do all americans actually have a lawyer
>>
>>67008373
Not even joking anon
What good is a lawyer for me?
I wrote my own will and I dont even own a house or plan to
>>
>>67009085
You probably won't ever need a lawyer. However, if you ever get arrested by the police, you should get one, or else the police will exploit your ignorance of the law to screw you in many ways.

And sadly, most of the people who don't call their lawyer are probably not doing it because of TV's influence

Wait a second, are you saying I need a lawyer because cops are trying to trick me into admitting shit I didn't do? I thought they were supposed to protect me, why would they do that?
>>
>>67006686
Because only someone with frequent charges being brought against them would have a personal lawyer on-call. And if they are frequently having charges brought against them they're most likely an asshole.
>>
>>67011020
>why would they do that?
Do you boys know what a 'quota' is?
>>
Not all lawyer shows only defend bad guys
>>
>>67011020
>why would they do that?
Because the fact that they arrested you means that they're convinced that you DID do it. In their minds, they're tricking you into admitting to stuff they did do. Police don't care about protecting you if they think you're a criminal.
>>
>>67011020
>I thought they were supposed to protect me
Warren v. District of Columbia says the police have no legal obligation to protect you

Cultural Marxism.

>>67012423
You're welcome. It is important for everyone to know exactly what their rights are.

>>67012499
How exactly is cultural marxism to blame for this? If anything this hatred of lawyers and civil rights for the accused is more of a conservative thing.

>>>/pol/
>>
>>67011020
Have you ever seen or heard of a police officer being used as a witness for the defense?

Anything you say may be used against you in a court of law.

The operative word is against.
>>
Those are generally weaker shows that follow a formula, having the police as anything other than 100% good guys usually doesn't happen on those shows. On shows that try and go a little deeper into reality, you will have plenty of people get lawyers any time they're asked about anything serious.
>>
>>67006686
Because TV almost always has the majority of the police as the good guys, but they're not.

If they're good, then a good person wouldn't need a a lawyer to protect you from them. Except you fucking do need a lawyer to protect you from them, because in reality, they're not the good guys if you're innocent and they're trying to railroad you.

>>67011020
Number of reasons. Stats/quotas, pressure from the brass to put someone away from a heinous crime.
>>
>>67006967
You're right, you don't need a lawyer

>Now just make a drawing that implicates you're involved in a rape and murder
>>
It's weird how in Columbo the bad guys almost never try and call their lawyer to prevent Columbo from constantly harassing them.
>>
>>67006967

same reason you don't give dna just for the asking: what if the lab fucks up and mix up your dna with what they found on the crime scene. try to get away from that one!
>>
It's not just in tvland. When my friend was being investigated by the police (nothing came of it) he started talking to a lawyer, and when one of the detectives talked to me about the incident in question he mentioned that my friend was lawyering up and that made him more suspicious. I was just thinking fuck you, I'd lawyer up too if I was being investigated for a crime.

PSA: if you are being investigated or arrested for a crime, always talk to a lawyer. Don't worry about appearing guilty by lawyering up, failing to get adequate legal counsel in a situation like that is far worse than a small increase in suspicion. I don't care how innocent you are, always get a lawyer.
>>
>>67011020
lol

Literally the type of person who ends up in the electric chair as an innocent.

Everyone should watch that video that other anon posted earlier. (And the several documents about murican "justice system" sentencing innocents to life sentences and death.)
>>
>>67010105
Is the point of this (aside from that the police are scumbags) that juries are retarded?

Because they sound just about as shitty as the police.
>>
>>67013526
Then there's also the fact that you getting a lawyer WILL never be held against you in court whereas anything you say to the police might. And I mean literally anything.
>>
>>67013620
Why yes, juries are notorious for being composed of people too stupid to avoid jury duty. Cotrary to TVland, real-world juries usually are more inclined to believe the prosecution and the cops.
>>
>>67013620
Well no shit your average farmers from some Sheepfuck, Alabama are retarded. The whole jury system is retarded and it hasn't been used in any civilized country for ages.
>>
>>67013710
People who are too stupid to avoid the duty and people who are eager to put them baddies to jail. Fucking retarded system.
>>
>>67013232
In several episodes they call in a favor with the department to try and have his bosses stop him, but it never works out for them. They should get a restraining order.
>>
>>67013620
Oh, and prosecutors are scumbags too.
>>
>>67013620
Both guys said it and both guys were right. People are stupid. Juries are made up of our peers, and our peers are fucking idiots, almost as stupid as you and I are.

It's just the cold, hard truth of life.
>>
>>67013670
>And I mean literally anything.
Indeed, even saying you're innocent can be used against you

>"I didn't do anything wrong, so can I go now?"
>"Anon seemed uneasy, despite claiming he had nothing to hide, yet constantly asked to be released, as if he did have something to hide. After all, why would a seemingly innocent man be so nervous around police?"
>>
>>67014099
What a god awful society we live in.
>>
>>67006686
>and they're treated like scumbags for doing so (and so are their lawyers)

This is true to life, though. Cops will definitely try to make you feel like a scumbag for calling a lawyer.
>>
>>67006967
>If you have nothing to hide

You're not the one who gets to decide if you have nothing to hide.
>>
>>67013821
>Oh, and prosecutors are scumbags too.

Prosecutors are not scumbags for trying to make someone look guilty; that's their job. And it's the defense attorney's job to make them look innocent. Our justice system relies on the theory that if both do their jobs well, the truth will usually win out. Of course, none of this works if the accused is too stupid to ask for a lawyer.
>>
>>67014293
This. This is why I don't mind it at all.
>>
>>67014538
>He's never dealt with an overzealous prosecutor or one obsessed with stats.
>>
>>67011020
Just yell "AM I BEING DETAINED" repeatedly, no need to get a lawyer
>>
>>67007197
This was an especially common cliché in the 80s, but it seems to have died down since then.
Worst part is that none of those "technicalities" work the way they say in real life. Just because thecop that arrested Freddy Krugger forgot to read him his Miranda Rights doesn't mean they have to let him go.
>>
>>67013749

And anyone in between, who honestly want to do right by the system, or are in any extent more knowledgeable than normal are generally mineswept in selection.

Both sides are vying for an impressionable group, not a sensible one.
>>
>>67006686
If you don't have a lawyer and you ask for one, how do you know it's not a cop in disguise pretending to be a lawyer?
>>
>>67017879
Firstly because that's straight up illegal.

Secondly because it's fucking dumb.

Because TV shows are a part of the machine and the machine doesn't want you to get a lawyer. The machine wants you to watch CSI and believe that police are combing sand dunes for dropped saliva.
>>
>>67006686

same thing in real life. good guy being smart and getting a lawyer is immediately seen as having something to hide.

just watched the scene where they made him invent how the woman got killed

this is absolutely disgusting, how can this stand
it's not even about whether the guy is innocent or not, the way it was handled is just absolutely horrible

really shows you you should never talk to police without a lawyer
>>
>>67014538
And yet the vast majority of criminal cases don't even go to trial because the prosecutor throws the book at the defendant in order to get them to plea out
>>
>>67020694
I answered the question. It's illegal. Nigger would lose his job for pulling that shit. Look it up ya fookin cunt
>>
>>67020694
Because you any evidence given to the cop would be useless
You could literally admit to the fake lawyer you had murdered 8 people and get off scot free
>>
>>67006967

Says the guy posting on a website known to be a hotbed for child pornography.

I bet if the NSA searched your hard drive and some detectives braced you hard enough, you could go to prison for a very long time.

Still wish you had called that lawyer?
>>
>>67006686
The show that you posted a picture from actually hits on this. In like the first episode, he points out that getting a lawyer doesn't make you look guilty, getting charged or arrested does.

I don't think all shows do this, though most of them do, and it is pretty weird and almost propagandic for them to pretty regularly portray people getting lawyers as guilty. I think you see it more in procedurals, though.
>>
>>67006967
No one has nothing to hide because no one has an innocent mind.
>>
>>67006686
I'm trying to think of a show that didn't have this and all I can think of is Prince of Bell Air where Will and Carl are asking for their lawyer/dad and are innocent.

Any shows that have this shit where an innocent person gets a lawyer?
>>
The Job of the police is not to protect you. It's to catch and prosecute people.

A lawyers job is to protect you legally.

That's why you should call a lawyer whenever you're involved with the police in any scenario.
>>
>>67011020
>are you saying I need a lawyer because cops are trying to trick me into admitting shit I didn't do?
You absolutely need a lawyer.

If the cops are apprehending you, it means they are convinced that you are guilty. They want to take you in, they want you to admit, and they want to close the case. They want immediate closure, because who likes unsolved cases? The sooner they get somebody in the can, the better.

It's not like there's a quota. That's a myth.

But they are definitely biased towards making these kinds of shortcuts. Not for the "hitting quota", but just to get closure and so that they can move on with the next case.

tldr: You are fucking stupid. Get a lawyer.
>>
>>67023521
>it is pretty weird and almost propagandic

I think it's more memetic. As people discussed earlier in this thread, lawyering up itself shouldn't be seen as suspicious but having a regular lawyer on standby is kind of suspicious. So some writer way back when thought a good way to make a character seem guilty is for them to have one, and over time and through other people using the same thing (often incorrectly) it's just been drilled into people's heads that lawyer = guilty. There's also the fact parents and teachers commonly use the, "If you've done nothing wrong then you've got nothing to hide," thing, which is all well and good at that stage, but when it comes to talking to people whose job it is to prove you're guilty, not so much.

Less propaganda and more just people being stupid.
