Roose never tried to help Robb. He advocated for his bastard to help take Winterfell because he likely gave Ramsay instructions to torch the castle. He took a huge portion of Robb's army to Duskendale which was a fruitless area with no tactical advantage and held his own men in reserve while Randyll Tarly decimated the northern forces. He also marched his men ahead of the surviving northmen so when they had to cross rivers, they would be safe from The Mountain picking off the straglers hanging around the back returning from Duskendale.
Roose probably had his mind made up as soon as Stannis lost at the Blackwater. You can even see him growing friendly with the Freys in the Clash of Kings Arya chapters. Roose was a survivalist and didn't want his house decimated at the Red Wedding, unfortunately for him that made him a lot of enemies.
