There was a bunch of other mediocre Fantastic 4 films released just a few years ago. This added nothing and looked more of the same. Fan 4 were never that popular anyways.

Well marketed "fun" movie that delivered exactly what it promised and was the only thing worth watching in a cinematic dead-zone part of the year. Great word of mouth helped it far more than anything else. Just people coming home talking about how "funny" and "enjoyable" the movie was which enticed other people to go see it.
This isn't terribly hard to understand, the only unusual thing here is that the R-rating didn't slow it down at all.
