They didn't bring her along for her skill. Her being there landed legitimacy to their operation. They didn't have the jurisdiction otherwise.
I could identity with Kate to such an extent that I lived the whole experience of the story vicariously through her. I felt all the tension and the sense of being in over your head that she was experiencing like I was in that back seat myself.
Pretty cool character all around, at least from my view.
