Rewatched it today, surprised how it still holds up.

I mean, it ain't perfect, but it's breddy good. It isn't really the sort of comedy that'll have you losing your shit laughing, it's more of an adventure movie filled with chuckles.

Comfy as fuck/10

Ramis had to rework it a shit ton to make Aykroyd's original concept watchable, and then when Murphy bailed had to redo Zeddemore (who was originally wisecracking ex-military introduced earlier).

Part of what made it work so well was that the characters (excepting Zeddemore) were carefully retooled caricatures of the actors playing them: Aykroyd the wide-eyed believer, Murray the smart-ass slacker, and Ramis as the guy behind the scenes just trying to hold it all together. The chemistry between the believer, the asshole, the geek and the straight man who otherwise might never be friends made the movie work.

Wiig, MacKinnon, McCarthy and Jones don't have strong enough personas to pull that off -- not because they're women but because none of them are legitimately dominant personalities to exploit (hence the emphasis on physical/gross-out comedy in the trailers).

It is a colossal fuck-up to depict the characters in the trailer as friends who value each other when the original script's mechanics revolved around these people barely trusting each other in the beginning.

One of the few perfect comedies.

It's good. It barely makes the list of top five comedies directed by Harold Ramis though. I remember lots of people wearing shirts with the ironed on logo on it when the movie was new. T was really marketed heavily.

And here's the thing: the line is not intrinsically hilarious, it's Ramis' angry-autist delivery that sells it. Everyone got dialogue written to the actor's strengths. Hudson's comparative normalcy is why he got the best line in the movie -- because he had the gravitas to consistently come from a position of disbelief of these 3 wackjobs:

Note that none of these lines are stereotypical funky negro or need to be.

Reitman directed it. Ramis made Aykroyd's endless stoner treatments into something with a 3 act structure and interesting characters.

Shit why did I think Ramis directed that? Makes sense now. Fuck I'm old, I used to remember things.

He plays Walter Peck's role.

Exactly - the characters all had a depth to them that reflected the actor's personalities to varying degrees. Ramis was smart enough to make use of their natural chemistry and familiarity to craft some genuinely nuanced comedy, and Reitman was perceptive enough to recognize it and build on it. That script in the hands of any other random ensemble would have had a substantially diminished comedic impact.

It's a true example of Kino
