How were so many monsters created in the 80's (we'll count 1978 as the cultural beginning of the 80's, because London Calling, The Cars, and Van Halen were very 80's)??

>Alien
>Predator
>Freddy
>Mother Fucking Turtles!
>Stay Puft
>Gremlins
>Robocop
>The Terminator
>Jason
>Slimer
>The worlds of Dark Crystal & Labyrinth
>Pumpkinhead (I'm reaching now)

Most have franchises and will live on like Dracula & Frankenstein's monster. What happened in the 80's to cause this creative outburst and will it ever repeat in our lifetime?

More like the 70's. Star Wars, Encounters of the 3rd kind and Jaws renewed the scifi/fantasy/horror blockbuster trend.

>How were so many monsters created in the 80's

Because George Lucas, Stephen Spielberg, and Ridley Scott decided to take them seriously and put the time, money and effort in to making them look realistic in the 70's.

Star Wars, Close Encounters, Alien, all were products of the 70's, and probably inspired by Kubricks 2001. Those 3 films, alone, inspired countless other film makers to actually explore the sci-fi / "monster" drama seriously, instead of half-assed the way they used to most of the time.

OK, so why didn't the 90's & 00's produce the cannon of original characters that the 77 to 87 decade did?

Seriously, /tv/, why didn't the 90's & 00's produce as many original, memorable characters? Did CGI kill the movie monster? Did not having to apply physics ruin character design?

The 80's started to see the demise of the major film studio as they sold out to outside agencies that viewed film more as a profit source than a source of artistic expression. Granted, there has always been a commercial aspect to film, however, the artistic aspect has become less and less important over the years, and the profit margin has become the priority. This shift began in the late 80's, and was pretty much complete by the end of the 90's.

This committee driven, profit approach, is what lead to the formulaic bullshit we see over and over again today, and the emphasis on reboots and sequels, rather than original stories.

This bums me out. It's like I'm excited to see whatever they do to a new ghostbusters, but at the same time this is why they have recycled old movie and comic characters for 15 years. :(
