It's fine when it's something universal and naturalistic as Das Boot. Generation War is a little apologetic but not towards Nazis but towards the older generation in general. Hence the original German title. It's really just a show about minorities. German minority that was brave enough to stand up and (in one sequence) Polish minority that would leave a train full of Jews (they would be sentenced to death by the underground state for this).
So watching this you must know why it was made. It's a product of its time.

I was pretty disappointed in this one to be honest. Maybe because one of the main subplots was a treatment of POWs by Japanese Army and this couldn't have been shown properly in a movie from the 50s.
The best are those large scale movies that show the whole operation in great details. So The Longest Day, A Bridge Too Far, Tora! Tora! Tora! or Patton.

Right, and I agree. But I don't think that necessarily disqualifies it when it has its calm moments. The battles are horrifying as shit on first watch and when you're not completely jaded from that sort of material.
If BoB and Pacific are deemable, y'know, its successors, SPR should fall under that category when it does the same thing.
But, then again, I don't really care about someone's personal taste list. Just kinda surprising it's not on there, is all.
