Yes and no.
The second season is actually a prequel season focusing on Batiatus. They filmed that while they waited for Whitfield to recover. But when he died, they replaced him for season 3 and it was at this point that the show quit being worth watching.
So, season 1 and 2.

I'm not for the "le enemies show respect to eachother in the final battle" trope, but this was done masterfully. Despite Spartacus realized that Crassus isn't like the other Romans, he still loathes him and what he stands for.
To me S3 was truly the best. The budget improved, so the CGI improved, Liam really got into character, so much that I almost cannot think of Andy in his stead.
Spartacus the Thracian died in that ludus along with Andy, and that's when Spartacus the Rebel King took his place.
