Is it worth continuing with this? I'm almost at the end of season 3 and while the previous two seasons were pretty good, this one feels like the quality dropped off a bit. Is season 4 any better?

You're right, there is a drop of quality at S3. However, S4 is one of the best seasons so you should watch it.
Everything after that is a piece of shit. You should notice that season 5 is awful if you try to watch it: S6+ manage to become even worse.
Don't listen to these guys, season 5 is still good. Very different from seasons 1-4 but still very good.
6 7 8 and not good. 7 and 8 are nearly unwatchable
Watch season 4 for the plot. Watch season 5 for Astor. Then stop watching.

it honestly felt like whoever was the showrunner knew it was going to go to shit, so at least ended the 4th season with something perfectly poetic and a natural result of his lifestyle.
They could have made this show a shitload better if they just killed off Laguerta in Season 1 like in the books. But no they had to keep that terrible character.

i'm a huge fan of Dexter and even I'll admit that if you just casually like it you should stop after season 4. If you really enjoy the show 5, 6, and 7 are all decent though. Just be prepared for them writing shit like a comic book instead of an actual show for adults. The last season is completely awful and has no redeeming qualities though.

Seven was actually good. I thought it had entertaining characters and was a perfect set up for the final season. Six was alright if you just want to see a Dexter v. Serial Killer plot for the 412321th time.

Yeah, it killed the whole tension. The first 2 seasons kept you on the edge of your seat because every episode Dexter was on the verge of getting caught, afterwards there was no pressure.
Season 4 is the best one, but the season finale doesn't feel like an ending to the show. You should watch up till season 5, it feels like an ending even though is not as good.

Season 4 had pretty high tension actually. Being that close to Trinity was extremely dangerous and that scene where he finds Dexter´s real identity was great. Dexter even lost his nerves and made tons of mistakes which he usually doesn´t.
Literally last episode of S4 was 10/10
First episode of S5 was 1/10 and everything after was 1 or 2 out of 10. I watched the entire thing. I remember towards the end of S6 I just caught myself watching it and thought 'this is utter shit, utter shit, it has been since S4, they're running about the miami rooftops like some CSI shit in the sun chasing a doomsday killer who is colin hanks, what a joke.
