Black Mirror is some seriously good contemp sci fi, but there are garbage episodes.
OP, watch these, they're incredibly well done:
>The National Anthem
>The Entire History of You
>Be Right Back
Skip these, they're ham-handed, crammed with bad tropes, and preachy:
>15 Million Merits
>White Bear
>The Waldo Moment
If those good three aren't enough, and you can stomach a measurable drop in quality, watch the Christmas special to satiate yourself:

I mean, I saw season 9 of Doctor Who, so I think I can handle it.
also thanks for the suggestion

I will look into them too

Black Mirror is completely subjective when it comes to taste, don't listen to this faggot. They're just 7 episodes, OP, I'm sure you have enough time to watch them all.

Star Wars isn't really sci fi

Well if you're asking for some essential Sci-fi, and you seriously haven't seen it, watch Star Trek. I generally recommend people start with TNG, and then check the other ones out if they like it, since a lot of people now can't handle the old style on a cold run, but considering you're coming from Dr. Who, I think it's safe to assume you can handle the 1960's version.
Also, regardless of what anyone's opinion of Rick and Morty is, it's unquestionably sci-fi.

i was considering watching it too, i saw some bits of the 80's movies on tv once

Orphan Black is good.
Damn no Twilight Zone yet? I mean if you went through old dw you can do Twilight Zone. It's definitely some essential stuff.
X-Files especially now that it's coming back
And if you liked rick & morty try venture brothers

Minimalist Sci-Fi approach dealing with A.I., Mass Surveillance etc.
Predicated the NSA sh-t a year before it was revealed to the world.
Long series though. Find some kind of list to see if there are skippable episodes.
