I remember watching an HBO documentary years ago about this, and being moved virtually to tears. Googled it again, because I didn't remember anything about him being a meth dealer. But sure enough, its suggested there, under "Alternative theories" that the whole thing was drug related robbery/rip off gone very wrong and it was spun into a "gay thing" for media attention.
