First of all what if scenarios aren't plot holes, they're things the character didn't do. Plot holes are inconsistencies and contradictions.
Secondly, we never know the specifics on how to make a horcruxe because they're obscure ancient evil magic. But considering they're all objects which could hold personal meaning to him, we're suppose to assume it just can't be any random object.
